I have a '97 Mt Max with a 2000 M-max Motor.
The current setup is Power Inc. Pipes (End Dumps),
Stock primary clutch, Bender orange spring, stock weights alum (10.3) in both holes.
MPI Roller Secondary 44/38 helix, green spring @ 90 degrees, Head gasket is split. Air box Mod.
Jetting 132.5 mains, 60 pilots needle in 1.5, fuel screw 2.5 turns out, reed spacers
19/40 gearing, 9 tooth anti-rachets, 151 2" track.

I had the secondary @ 60 it ran good but could not get the r's over 8100 so I tightened it up to 90 now I am still low @ 8500 r's. On a track up a hill it does not gain speed it just levels off.
My 2000 pulls and gains spead all the way up to the top of the trail then busts out the top like it wants to go somewere. But my '97 does not want to keep pulling.

Any Ideas?????????

Less helix??
Stiffer Spring??
Drop a rivet in weights??
42 tooth lower sprocket??

I'm no clutching expert by any means but the clutching articles I've read usually advise against trying to control the rpms with changes to the secondary. The best approach is to get to target rpms with changes to the primary. If the rpms are too low I think you either have too stiff of a primary spring or the weights are too heavy (or both).

My 2000 MM mostly stock setup is similar to yours with the exception of the spring (same weights and rivets but I use a Y-G-Y spring) stock 43 helix at 70 for secondary.

The 2000s also use 8 tooth drivers instead of the 9s stock in the 97. Put some 8 extros on and see what happens, that will effectively lower your final drive ratio and provide additional clearance at the front of the tunnel for better snow evacuation, that may allow your current clutch setup to work.

Empty both holes in the primary & run secondary at 70 degree wrap.

What you need to do is grear down .I have a 780 mnt srx with 156 track and 9 tooth drivers anti and big wheel kit I am running 19 -42 works good at 8000-9000 ft with a straight 44 helex team secondary but if you are running in high alt you need to gear down that will raise your rpms you can fight with the clucthing all day long but if you are not geared right you will have one hell of a time finding out were you need to be.GREG

I used to run PI's and never ran them over 8400 rpm's. They pull better at 8250 to 8400. I think you're probably on the downside of the power band at 8500, Ken.

So when do you know you need gear down as opposed to play with clutching?

I've got a '97 MM with 9T 2.52" pitch drivers at 18:40 now....same motor/clutching I had in a '98 MM with 8T 2.52" drivers at 19:39. I think I've lost a little RPM on top since I made the swap (or maybe just paying more attention now!!). I'm just beginning to understand clutching, so I've got some things to try, but I want to better understand what's going on.....

Thanks!!
