How smokey is your Yammi?

My Yami dealer told me that normal oil consumption is about 1litre oil for 150 km's.Mine burns a little more. But lately it is really burning more, smokes like crazy when fisrt started. Would this be cause the tempurature got colder?

If it started taking more oil, the pump is probably bad and you will need a new one. Of course check the adjustment first to make sure it is right, but usually anything else that may have went wrong would cause it to take less.

check to see if the top half of the cable is pulled out of the sheath. this would make consumpiton heavy.

to much smoke or not

I got a little worried when it was mentioned that maybe my oil pump is on the it's last legs. Stayed up late last nite determined to solve the problem one way or another.Got my shop manual and dug in.First I checked the oil line to see if there was a leak...nope.CHECK 1 complete. Next I re-adjusted my throttle cable for slack. Well there was a little more there then I liked. My throttle play is between 1-2mm now. That play being to big may effect oil pump control. CHECK 2 complete. Next I checked a critical area for play...the choke cable. Can't be sure but now the adjustment is correct with 1-1.5mm play.If your cable is tight..maybe choke isn't off totally when the lever is in off position. CHECK 3 complete.I started the sled up last nite, ran a little eratic and there was a major explosion(backfire) and then the engine died. I said to myself...NOW WHAT THE @$Wk.Tried to restart..wouldn't fire up.Slakened the throttle cable half twist.Choke on and pulled.# pulls later she was running,No strange sounds, everything looks good.Wouldn't want a reed to break off from explosion or head gasket blown.Reved it up a bit and went to bed.The next morn fueled and oiled her up. The moment arrived//pulled and she fired up .Ran great all day.Put on 153 km and checked my oil consuption. Was I ever amazed, used only 3/5 th's of a litre of oil. Before this it was eating over a litre of oil and was getting worse.I did something right and feel much better now. :2strokes: :yam: :flag: ;):D

My sled has 16500kms on it and it smokes like mad and never used to. It is running Amsoil Interceptor, exact cable length and it is seated properly and check the length and to see if it is seated regularily. It is stored in a heated garage and it allowed proper warm up.

Could it be possible that the pump is shot? I would have thought that if it was shot, itd be pumping less oil.

The sled smokes so badly that after sitting for 10 seconds, a great big black ring develops under the exhaust outlet on the ground. BUT, I have not yet fouled a plug or have a bogging problem.

the ring or new sled

Yah my girlfriend said she wants a ring before I can get a new sled... I have to decide what strokes are more important...... :o|

I use Yamalube seems to be less smokey.

tell her if you cant ride it or eat it you dont need it<<<<<

Mine is preety bad as well, and it just started being like that too for no reason, didnt adjust anything or change oil. Oil cable is exactly factory spec, but im thinking of leaning it out as im burning oil as if it was going out of style.
If yours just went that way for no reason, the pump went bad. Yamaha designs them so when they go, they go to full rich for engine safety. Maxdlx

Max is right, when these pumps start wearing out they go to full stroke, so they actually use more oil. Good engine protection on their part.

9000kms or 5400miles and i barley use any oil i'm wondering if this is a good thing, I can go through 3 tanks ( I think the SRX has a 40 liter tank) of gas and when i go to top off the oil it usally takes a full quart of Amsoil Interceptor. Doing the math thats 120 liters to 1 quart of oil. When i first start the sled it smokes for a minute but thats it, i bought the sled with just over 4000kms and no engine problems so far, I do have reeds, i don't know if this improves or not. I do know that before my roomates SRX motor blew he was using alot more oil than me (Yamalube) but i would burn more gas, and was wondering if the syntheic oil is helping with oil comsumption, or the sled was jetted before i bought it.
