Had an earlier post explaining about breaking the shaft ( bolts broke off) that holds the bottom of the front shock under the tunnel on my 1998 V-max 700 xtc. I got the bolts out, re threaded it and got it back in today. I started putting the straps back on but have run into a problem. The machine was jacked up when I put the straps back on , I got the straps back on but of course (not thinking ) when I let the sled down the straps now have some slack in them. When the sled is sitting down should the straps be really tight, loose ????? I have done all this work without dropping the suspension and am hoping I can solve this last problem without having to drop it. We are expecting 30 to 40 cm of snow tonight so I would really like to solve this dilema. Thanks Diceman
 
no they will ahve some slack. the straps are to keep teh schock from opening up too much. if it opens too far it can rip the plunger out of teh shock if the back gets compressed i believe they had taht poblem on the 97s and forgot hwo they fixed the problem happened to mine twice when my brotehr owned it
 
Thanks for the reply. Do you mean it is so the shock doesn't open to far when it is jacked up??? With the shock being compressed when the sled is sitting on the ground it could open to far??? So the straps should be tightened with the sled jacked up???I am really new to this sledding stuff. Diceman
 
Yeah it is going to have slack. I put a new shock on my sled and it has slack in it. I though the same thing. I though that my shock was junk so I got a new on and it still did it so yes it should have slack on it.
 
The straps should have slack when sitting on the ground but the straps should be tight when the sled is jacked up????????????? Diceman

Got it back together together but not sure if I have it right. The shock is attached to the shaft at the bottom but I am not sure if the shaft is mounted in the right place??? I you are looking sideways at the tunnel from the left side of the sled should the bottom of the shock be bolted at 9 oclock, 12 oclock, or 3 oclock on the shaft?? I am thinking I might have the bracket that holds the bottom of the shock turned the wrong way. Right now I have the shock bolted at 9 oclock . I looked at the parts diagram for my 98 v-max deluxe 700 (it is part 36 ) and it looks like it should be at 9 oclock. This makes sense to me but if I am loosing you guys I will try another explanation later. Diceman

that botom mount should only go one way. sticks out to 9 oclock or stright towrds the front of the sled. if u can move that mount around a hole lot u have another problem. that mount should have slots that it grabs onto teh rail and then another tab on each side that the ruber bumper stops bolt to in the back and the other bolt will go threw the shaft part.
