My friend is looking to buy some 2002 viper shocks for his 1998 MM700 and I am looking for a quick answer for if they will fit the front? and the rears? He really only NEEDS the fronts due to a crash but if the rears fit he wants to use them to hopefully reduce the bottoming out. He is not too interested in doing too much modification to get then to fit. I searched but have not found the exact info i needed. Not used the right search terms i suppose...
Thanks for any help. Grant

the viper has a different style upper mount for the shock

How is it different? The shock from the MM looks like the same style mount as my viper has. But i am basing it purely on looking at it. Is the open ended side a different dimension from one to the other?
here is the wrecked one:
vs the one looking to replace with.

I put a Viper shock kit in my 98 V-max. No problems.

The travel might be different, 7" to 9". The mountain sleds are sometimes shorter.

Old thumper-was it the front and rears you did?
Not too worried about the longer travel. just takes the jumps better that way.

Longer travel is good, but do you have to change your rods or anything else?

I did all 4. All the Viper shocks were the same length as the stock V-Max shocks. The big shock in the rear - the Viper shock has roller bearing mounts - the stocker had bushings. I bought new bushings and spacers for that. The center shock - I just got new bushings cause the old ones were worn. Same with the front shocks.
Only thing that was different was that on the stock center shock the adjuster was on the bottom. The Viper shock has to be mounted with the adjuster on top for clearance. I'm not sure how it mounts in the Viper.
