Busted left side trailingarm

Hi guys!.

Last night I delivered a 97 V-Max 600 SX back to a friend, I`ve changed the mag side crank seal and some other things, and I decided to go for a test ride with her, I rode my SRX, a friend with an Vector MTN also joined us.

After riding up to where we all use to gather around the camp fire, my friend with the Vector and I decided to play a little in a hill near by. We rode there last weekend and it was fine.

When I rode up the hill, suddenly from nowhere came a rock/mountain sticking up from the snow.. and drove into it. Damnit. I tried to avoid it and rode further to the right where it was covered with snow, but I still hit it somewhat hard.

A few minutes afterwords when I got stuck and had to turn the sled around, I noticed that the left side trailing arm looked like a mess, all bent and gees.

The metal has a "collaps" on the inside, looks scary.

Can I remove it from the sled, straighten it out and weld some angle irons onto it in order to make it stronger, or should I replace the whole arm with a new/used one?.

Gees this sucks, we just got alot of snow up in the mountains.. .

OK.. it sucks. Are they really fragile or ?. Didn`t take much force to ruin it actually.. .

What is most common to do?. Repair or replace?.

A friend came to visit me, god bless 4WD hehe:). (he has a 1995 Arctic Cat ZRT800).

We went for a little slide-on-the-lakes ride.

you can repair it, and make reinforcement where its most damage. but it proboly wont look so nice.. my friend alsow borke his when he hit a rock, he replaced it.. check price for new and then decide!
 
I wish my trailing arm looked like that!!!!See my thread in photo section and you will know what i'm talking about...I know it sucks what the dealers want EH!!!!
 
Ok guys a new one costs 198$ , not that expensive. Costs much more in Norway though, but I guess Rich can get me one.

I think I will repair it so that I can ride until I can afford a new one. Oh, what is the correct name for this part in the Yamaha world?.

Is it hard to remove all the arms that are attached to the trailing arm?.
Is it hard to pull the "steering spindle" out of the arm?.

I think I will remove it, straighten it out and weld something onto the backside of it so make it stronger.
 
make shure you have all the bushings included when you order the trailing arm. i know they not included.


well at least you did less damage that mine has. i lost upper and lower control arms too.

yamasquaw my damage is about 1/2 way between yours and kims on same side.
 
You can repair it with no problems.
I damaged mine last year. I put it in a break at work and straightened it out then welded plates around the bent area. It wasn't pretty looking but was actually stronger than new, at least at the point of the welds. Don't make it permenant though. Last weekend I hit a rock under the snow on the same side and the t-arm bent further back almost to the pivot point where the arm bolts to the sled. This not only bent the arm but also damaged the tunnel. I believe if the arm were stock without the reinforcement it would have bent more in the area yours did and not done any other damage.

I would put a new one on,,,Not repair it,there maid to collapse so your
tunnel don't get bent up.

If you re enforce it with iron you'll make it too strong and take a
chance of ruining your tunnel.
 
Hi guys !.

Today I "temporary" repaired the trailing arm, I`m kind of short on money so I thought this was the best thing to do. I will replace it as soon as I can afford one.

Gees look at the green grass... is it winter?.

First I put it up like this in the bench clamp.

I heated it with a propane heater and bent it with my hands.
 
I then found a little thing angle iron, think the iron was about 2mm thick and welded it onto the trailing arm where it was bent. (used thin iron so that it wouldn`t become too strong, this way I hopefully wount ruin the footboards/tunnel the next time I hit a rock)

I`m not that good at welding but It`ll hold up.

I then sprayed on a coat with non-rust base paint.

When I got the sled the guy gave me a few boxes with paint that had the right color code for my sled, this paint is ment to be sprayed on but I don`t have that quipment so I just mixed a little paint with hardener and painted the arm with an old stiff brush, hehe, as I said, temporary repair this!. Going to mount it tomorrow and I hope there will come some snow for the weekend.. .

Oh I hit a rock that come out of no where, I rode in the same track as did last time when I rode up that hill, and now there was a rock.

I spoke to a dealer here in Norway, he only wanted 140$ for a brand new arm, I think that was really cheap, so I might as well buy a new one, but I have to wait till I get enough money.

I guess the repair is OK function wise, but it looks like "¤% , but as long as I can ride I`m happy:).

Today I filled my sled up with gas and oil, also put on a prefilter. I have an exhaust leak, first I thought it was a bad spring, but it turned out that the round gasket between the manifoil / pipe was missing on one pipe. Guess thats why the spring seemed so loose, the gasket will make the distance between the hooks, longer.
Wellwell a little extra noise is just charming. (not good performance wise I guess, but wellwell)
