Water pump impeller question

I need to replace the water pump impeller on my 97 700SX?

Can I just replace the impeller or do I need to get the two seals that go on before the impeller and/or the washer that goes on the bolt??

The impeller came right off and I did not remove any of the seals.

The splines on the impeller are worn away, so it no longer moves the coolant.

I'd imagine the mechanical seal behind the impeller is shot if the impeller was bouncing around on it, the 2 seals are about $18, seems silly to maybe have to do it twice.

Have you done this?? Do the two seals come out and install eaisily with the motor in the chassis??

PS - I wondered how your trailing arm sled rides with the mono. That is you that has done that, isn't it??
 
In the sled it may be a little pain because you're working upside down, be patient, don't use too big of a hammer and you'll be all good.

Just to clarify - the impeller was not out of balance or at least its not missing any fins, just the splines on the impeller that meet the spines on the impeller shaft are wore away.

So the shaft is just spinning inside the impeller and the impeller is not moving.

i had the exact same problem with the splines in the impeller wearing down....
mine also leaked coolant from the water pump bleed hole so i changed the seals...i pulled the whole motor to do it....
i realize some guys have changed the seals without pulling the motor but i cant stand working in small spaces and the job is much easier when the motor is out...
personally if i were you and your sled was not leaking, i wouldn't change the seals. i would throw the new impeller on and change the small washer between the nut and impeller.
note:make sure your new impeller comes with its ceramic seal(white coloured seal in the back of the impeller). i got one without it which caused me lots of grief.....the impellers are supposed to come with this seal.
to sum it all up, i wouldnt change the seals if your sled is not leaking coolant but thats just my opinion...

I gotta agree with Viperino, i wouldn't do the mechanical seal unless you get it back together and it is leaking. I WOULD get a new washer between the bolt and the impeller though. That washer makes a seal and they are very critical. Not a cheaper little piece either, but don't cheap out on it. A regular o-ring or similar doesn't work well, tried many different things. ;)!
