SRX Reverse install

After a season of perspiration and back aches man handling my slightly overweight MSRX7 out from between trees, I've decided to add just a little more weight, ...the good weight, a reverse kit. As the SRX to my knowledge has no official reverse option, I filtered through all the yamaha forums to get a consensus on the best kit for the job. I decided on a Viper kit which I purchased from Ebay ($425. cdn incl. shipping, about $300us.).

There is no easy way to install reverse on an SRX without modifications. With a little help from the yamaha forums and some of my own mods, I came up with the following solution;

A). First remove pipes, silencer, coolant tank (drain coolant first), brake scoop, drain gearbox and remove cover.

B). Remove flanges from Viper gearcase cover (used reciprocating saw and grinder). (SEE PICS)

C). Discard coolant tank mounting bracket and cut away mounting bracket mounting block from airbox (used grinder).

D). Discard short coolant hose from rear of coolant tank and replace with a longer hose (approx. 2" longer). (SEE PICS)

E). Fasten coolant tank using high quality metal tab tie wrap and install brake air scoop. (SEE PICS)

F). Before moving to the next step, you will need a new HYVO 3/4 top gear and a HYVO 3/4 chain to mate with the new HYVO 39T gear provided with the kit. (This kit will not work with the stock 15W gear and chain on 98' & 99' SRX's, ...00' and above use HYVO components). (SEE PICS)

G). Follow "Pro Action reverse installation" from totallyamaha.com tech section (pretty much identical to the Viper install).

H). Enlarge silencer mounting hole slightly allowing mounting bolt to fit.

I). Reinstall exhaust, top up gearbox with 75W synthetic gear oil, top up coolant and bleed cooling system.

I thought there was only 11 wide and 13 wide. 15 wide on a Polarbus. Any how the bender can allows clearance so you do not have to cut off the battery support. But you will have to modify the pivot arm that pivots on the case it will have to be cut and have about a 1" offset welded into it in order to clear one of the pipes. I used a viper kit-same size bottom gear and chain. this was for an 01 srx. you can also mount the shifting linkage without modifying the coolant system You mount it on the "out-side "of the chaincase
instead of the inside. you willhave to get a spacer and longer bolt to bolt it to the frame. You will also have to drilll out the threads that would have connected it to the chain case and install a new longer bolt through the linkage frame and the chain case. I will try to post a picture of this once i get my sled back here

viper reverse in a srx

Just put a viper reverse kit on my 01 srx. I'd like to thank srx_eh and totallyamaha for the great instructions. ;)! Can you say, "that jacket's tight son". It's tight but it fits. A couple things I'd like to add, I removed the silencer heat sheild screw where it would rub on the chaincase cover and stuck a thin piece of rubber there for chafing reasons. For the extended hose I used a 1" inside dia. one. Seemed a hair big but that's all I could find. Also, at the shifting mechanism, where it rides close to the coolant tank, I cut the one bolt shorter so it wouldn't rub on the tank. :rockon: :rocks:

wanasrx do you have any pics of what the lever looks like that you would flip to put it in reverse? i dont want anything ugly on my sled... thanks
 
I just saw the post. I'll get a pic as soon as I can. It looks like any other Yamaha with a factory reverse install.

I put reverse on my 98 and didn't have to discard any hoses or replace them with longer ones.Instead of mounting the reverse handle bracket tight to the frame I put a spacer (about 1.5 inches) between the frame and top mount to allow room for the coolant tank to stay put.The other mounts go to the coolant bottle bracket front side.I even bent the handle down a bit where it comes through the cab to make the cutout a bit smaller.I'll take some pics as soon as possible if anyone wants to see them.

Hello I'm in the process of installing a reverse kit on my 2001 srx 700. I've heard the I could use a cable to engage it instead of the handle. I can't seem to find any information on that setup. Also I would love to see pics of your setup if you have any. Thank you! Andre R.
 
this is an old thread and og poster might not get notifications any more. you might have better luck with a private mesage to him.
