Well, I had the trip from hell in Island park this last weekend. After getting to the parking lot at 2:00 in the morning and -20* F we unloaded and hit the back of the sled on the trailer. I checked it out but apparently there was a very small hole in the coolant hose because it overheated and seized at about 3:00 in the morning before we got everyone to the cabin. :o|
I swear, this is the last time I'm letting anyone ride my sled. I guess the temp light didn't come on or something. I wasn't ridding it when it killed.

Anyway. I pulled the top off and one piston's completely toasted. The crown is broken off almost all the way around and you can see almost all of the rings and at one point there's a hole completely through. The other two cylinders are scuffed enough I think they'll need bored.

This is on a 98 mountain max 700.
What I need to know is what steps I need to go through to rebuild this? Am I going to have to do work to the crank case? I'm sure I'll have to bore the cylinders and replace the pistons.

I'd really like to avoid pulling the engine out but I guess that's probably what I'm going to have to do.

You' ll be removing the engine. If you see metal you'll need to get it out of the block. You should be able to find the parts you need on here most likely.DO a search.

no time like the present to go right threw it,,yup you should be able to find
everything you need on here...

Sorry to hear that man,,I NEVER loan my sled to anyone....

Try to stick with oem pistons and rings too..

yep, I guess I already knew that. So what do I want to look at. I guess I'm replacing the seals, looking at the needle bearings/rods etc...
Will I most likely be re-sleaving the cylinder that cooked or can you bore them when they're bad like that? Maybe I need to get some pictures up here.
I was just letting him run back to the truck to pick up his girlfriend, I guess I've learned my lesson. This is the second sled I've had burn up while someone else was running it. The first one was a phazer so I didn't care about that one so much but this time it really kills me.

yea post some pics of the cyl. so we can see how bad it is.

If it an't to bad you can have it cleand up with Muriatic Acid and then
ball honed.

Well, I'm sure the one's pretty toasted. The other two might be saved. I just got off the phone with the dealer, according to them yamaha doesn't offer an oversized piston to allow me to bore the cylinders so I guess I'm looking at resleaving the dang things unless there's another option. I'm not sure about where to get sleaves from either. OEM sleaves are about $90 each, dennis kirk sells some that are about $58 but I'm not sure if they're any good.

try for used in here or ask richirich. someone else posted he got him a set of rebuilt cylinders for his sled in here.

Okay, this is going to be ugly. The following are not for the feint of heart

Boy that baby looks like she got HOT!!!
im not shure if that cyl. could be cleand up with acid or not,,you may want to start hunting forr one..Time for a good going through now

Make sure the overheat light circuit is working before you run the sled again.

yeah, the hose has a kink in it but it's not as bad as it looks. It was the hose on the other side that got a hole in the under side of it and leaked all the coolant out. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it got hot like crazy, I don't know how the kid ridding it didn't know about it.
