No top end from my Viper....

Hey guys, just bought a brand new 04 SX Viper, approx 1700 kms on it so far this year.....I've been told that I should be able to get at least 180km/h out of it on hard packed snow....I've ripped my sled up a hard packed lake a few times now and the most mine will do is 140....does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be the problem here?????

Theres definitely something wrong here because a buddy of mine was on a 600 grand touring and he was getting 145 out of that.......
 
180= 111 mph. not likely. at the most without reverse expect 106-107 and with reverse 104-105. most guys get good top speed #'s running on glare ice with a light dusting of powder. i would start by putting a new belt on. what are the rpm's? stock? is it a viper s?
 
The belt is in perfect condition....not 100 percent sure on the rpms and I have a stock viper er with the reverse and electric start taken off....(dealer did this to drop the price of the sled)
 
start by checking the rpm's and make sure the belt is the proper width and sitting slightly above the top of the secondary, .5mm i believe. also check all the little stuff like track tension. if its too tight (dealers set it too tight!) you can lose an easy 10 mph!
 
I would say clean the powervalves and see what that brings - my viper will do 104-110 MPH depending on temp and what you are running on - 110mph being seen on long straits that are somewhat packed and temps near 0 degrees f.

good call on the valves. make sure they are clean and synced!
 
On the speedo, we see 110-120 mph on stock and clutched Vipers on hardpack. Check your rpms, you want to run 8400-8600. Check to see that it holds steady rpm from shift out. Check your springs, measure the free length, and check your belt also.
 
I ride an 04 viper. when my power valves didn't work it was topping about 90, with the power valves working I have seen 113 tops... on the speedo... my power valve cables were miss routed
 
Check your valves, get them adjusted. Keep your track loose (just enough so it doesn't rachet on you).

Check to see if you are getting good fuel mileage! trust me my viper was slow when I got it, it was the fuel mixture screw was set too rich from the factory, it made the difference!

Try these things and I'm sure you should gain speed. ;)!

This weekend we were two on the sled with saddle bags on a lake and I got 161 km/h on the speedo. I know alone I will get between 175 and 180 km/h

About the fuel milage.....I'm getting OK milage, but no near as good as other viper owners have told me they were getting. I'm actually only getting roughly 150-160 kms per tank....I ride fairly hard but most of the time on a groomed trail. This is only my first year with this sled but I know it isn't performing up to par so far, tanks for all the tips guys
 
Just thought I'd add....I've been running Yamalube and a general 2-stroke oil in my sled this year....what are most of you guys burning in your sleds??
 
I run Shell Advanced (not the synthetic). Your fuel mileage seems to be poor. I had the same problem with mine. Are your plugs black? You can easily down jet a viper to 153.8 on the main jet and adjust your fuel mixture screw to 1 7/8 turns. Once I did that my viper was getting much better fuel mileage and was much faster.
