97 600 twin, ring caught exhaust port...

At 3300 miles the ring must have turned and caught the exhaust port on the mag side, 97 Vmax 600 (2) XTC. The jug is messed up really bad, so is the cylinder and the head from pieces bouncing around after the jug got torn up.
What are my options? Can I sleeve the cylinders? I have read about a "piston update" - was that a Yamaha bulletin that was covered under a warranty of some type? Or am I left to fend for myself on this one?
Where is the cheapest place to get a new jug and piston?
The head is nicked up, is this salvageable my polishing the nicks and scoring out or do I need a new head also?
I can get some pics soon.

Very common problem with the 97 600's. Mine ent just out of warranty in 98 and Yamaha covered 2 jugs pistons rings gaskets and all labor. You are pretty much out of luck in your case. You ALMOST REACHED THE "magic" 3500 mile mark. My dealer told me hadn't seeen any of these over 3500. Post for cylinders adn if possible, use the upgraded 98 pistons. I have 2 of these sleds and 1 is still running real good. The other is a parts sled. Let me know if you need anything off of it.

I guess at this point I am looking for a new cylinder jug, piston, rings, and some new gaskets.
BTW, can these jugs be sleeved?
 
I just started tearing apart my 98 for a part out. Have good cylinders, new spi pistons, and head. New exhaust gasket, new .6 head gasket. Well the new stuff has all of 4 miles on it. Crank bearing went out at that point.

Let me know if your interested in any or all and we can make a deal.
 
I believe maximum performance has reconditoned cylinders on there website,not sure on price ,but its another possibility if getting used parts does'nt pan out.

Yes, I did know about it I suppose, but I wasn't sure if it was something I had to do on my own or if it was covered by Yamaha. I talked to my dealer and they said there was never any engine work done and that there was no "recall" that had to do with the pistons. It was kind of ironic as the piston failed at about the same time I was learning more and more about the issue. Too late on my part I guess, costly mistake.

I have a brand new set of updated pistons for that engine if you need them. PM me if you need them.
 
Been there done that.

You can get reman-d cylinders. I got mine from Maxx. I used my dremel to polish my combustion chambers smooth after the nicking up one of them took. (1250 miles since rebuild and no issues) Total cost involved with gaskets and good OEM pistons is under $500.
 
Mine burned down at 3000. Same thing as you described I was warned too but it ran so good I didn't want to put new pistons in. But after my cylinder went I bought 2 new Wiseco pistons, bought a jug off of ebay and got all my gaskets from bill bune. I took out the crank and flushed it and a bunch of metal shavings came out of my crank bearings on that side. But I put everything back together new pistons, cleaned crank, all new seals, and took two layers out of my head gasket, put in new reeds. I have about 350 miles on the fresh motor and it is way faster than before.

Well that is good news that it runs better; I suppose that I should flush out the rest of the motor also.

Don't feel bad I did that twice this year. Both of my sleds are down, my 700 and the wifes 500. That's the second time for my 700, same cyl both times, PTO end. If you can find good used jugs go for it they are usually cheaper than a repair. The nicasil is very hard and mine after 14,000 km has next to no wear. Just brush the cyl up with 500 grit sand paper to reseat the new ring and slap her together and your ready to rock.

I was told that the wisecos have bad tolerances and I would get piston slap. I haven't noticed any problems with them yet and my motor screams. With my old motor you could pull it over with ease and it always seemed to run great, but since I thinned out the head gasket, new pistons, rings, reeds, I almost broke my wrist pulling it over for the first time. It has crazy compression now.

I have put together a few motors that have burned down and haven't had too many problems. My XT was pretty bad so I pulled the crank and flushed it. I was amazed at how many metal shavings came out. So for now on I with pull every crank on the engines I rebuild. Plus it's good to replace the crank seals, you don't want to lean burn a fresh engine with an air leak.

Just let thos wisecos warm up good before you pin it!!!!!!!
