Where is going to be my best bet for buying parts for a rebuild? The sled is a 96 Vmax600xt. It's got several thousand miles on it since it was last rebuilt. I was starting to notice a little oil seepage around the exhaust and figured a freshening up would be in order after I finished my trip. Well it got 28 miles into day 2 of 3. I lost compression on the Mag side. I haven't taken the head off yet. However the plug had the gap closed up. The other plug looked great, not hot, not oily. I figure I was looking at having to go 2 new pistons, rings, head gasket, crank gasket...
It sounds like I should go all oem. Should I just go to my local dealer? I don't have any particular loyalty other than they order stuff and it takes about a week to get it and they aren't open mondays.
Obviously I'll be looking at other things like my reed cages, etc. Is there anything I should take a really close look at? Anything else I should be doing now that I'm in there?

sounds like you got a good start going,, i would add crank seals and reeds(oem),,and give everything a good looking over and stay with oem if ya can.
I haven't pulled the head yet but I'm scared about why the gap was closed on the plug. It wasn't totally shut but it was less than .030. I'm worried about something broken in the crank or connecting rod. Then again it could be the wrist pin right? Hopefully the cylinder isn't marred up. If it isn't visible, what do I do to the sleeve? Just clean it up?
I picked up a service manual, unfortunately it's for a 97. I know the pistons are a different #, but it gives me a good reference for procedure. There are some things I wouldn't have caught like locations of the gaps in the rings and clips.
I'm debating about even doing anything right now because I don't know that I'll be up to use it again this season. Even if I could get parts it would be too tight to get parts and put it together for next weekend and then we have stuff pretty much the two weekends after that and then, voila, season over.

plug spec is 28 to 31mm for your sled so if it was under 30mm thats not bad
unless it was like 15 or 20!!!!!
i think bottem end is ok,,if not you would deffenetly know it.. but like i said
check everything out...
If you need anything let me know i have your manual!!!!!!

There where no scraping sounds or anything menacing coming from the motor (other than running on one cylinder.) The funny (if you could call it that) was that I had just put on a new belt as I could feel the old one was starting to dissintegrate. New belt on, ran good for a couple of miles almost into town and then it didn't seem like it was backshifting....I thought, well maybe a peice of the old belt got down in the secondary and I missed it. (Trailside repairs can do that I know.) But then when I slowed down I heard the slight backfires and I knew I was on 1.
I appreciate all of the help.
how would I know or feel better about the bottom end?

the thing most likely broke the piston between the ring lands, Yamaha's service piston is made of better material as well as they widened the ring lands, I would put nothing but factory parts in that thing.................
I appreciate all of the help I can get. I probably won't tear into it until next Saturday. I've got my fingers crossed that it's not too bad inside.

uncross your fingers, that would be painful for a week, if it closed the plug, its bad
The sled itself has over 8000 on it. I don't rememeber exactly. I was "freshen-ed up" somewhere around 4 or 5k.
The plug wasn't totally closed.
I've seen what piston-plug contact looks like on 4-stroke V-8's....this didn't look like that....

8k,,i would check the bearing on the crank,,make shure there tight and spin
freely.
When you tear'n in to the bad boy?????
Probably Saturday. What all is involved in checking the crank bearing? Don't make me try to convince the wife I need a new 4-stroke....
I was really happy with the work I did on the rear suspension. Especially after riding the newer sleds and they pretty much rode identical (only with more darting...)

Just remove the crank from the case and look to see if they spin freely and
don't make any noise or feel ruff when spun..try to see if they wobble back
and forth at all.....

Not pretty....
I tore into it yesterday and it wasn't pretty. I'll let it at that until I get some photos today.

photos....
here's the first set
The first couple are of the head. The PTO side looked perfect (to me.) The mag side...well....am I going to need to get it replaced or can it be re-worked?
The last one is the Mag side Jug...
