the thing is that I never heard it go. I had just swapped out the belt and it was running good. Then I thought it didn't backshift (so I thought) and I assumed it was just a piece of belt in the secondary. I didn't run it very long. (Apparently it doesn't take long.)
The good side looked great. Seriously, I could still see the hatch pattern on the jug. The piston top looked great and even. No burn looks or anything.

ouch my one head was bad in my opionion (still using it) had i would say 1/3 as many dings in the dome, polished them out smooth luckily they wheren't too deep and went along with my business, that looks pretty bad man, hows the crank case pretty filled up or did most of the debree blow out. Good luck with the rebuild man. If you need to go over i will tell ya i can feel a difference in mine with it just 20 over on the one cylinder hopefully it will be better yet when i redo the otherside this summer. Anyhow let us know how it turns out.
I didn't pull the crank out but I "fished" around the crank to see if I could feel anything and nothing was down in there. It looked like most of it when out my pipes.
I'd rather not bore it out. I've been talking to Rich. I want to do things right but I also would like to do it on some sort of a budget.

Ya i was leary about doing it to mine but got stuck without a choice and it seems to pull harder so i'm happy, thats good that you didnt seem to find anything in teh crank case. It was actualy only 40 to have it bored over but the cylinder was sleeved.

How's the bad cyl. can it be cleand up...you don't want to boar it.
if it's real bad look for a good used one. you want to keep your Nicasil..
The bad one is bad. It's not as bad as it looked when I first pulled it. A woman at work's husband has a sled shop. I might ask his opinion. Rich gave me a guess on what it is to recondition the bad jug. If anyone has a used jug (or head) they want rid of ....let me know!

I'd also pull the motor split the case and flush the crank..you need to put
in new crank seals anyway.....unless you did that already.

man....crank seals too....
I did try to move the crank in and our and it's pretty solid.
I'll have to dig to find some info on crank seals now....

Well the thing is is you should do it right(not trying to tell you what to do

your right there got half torn apart all ready crank seals are importaint too
hate to see ya get it all back to gether and she burns down again because
of a lean condition by a bad crank seal..plus i know stuff got down in to
the lower case and crank.should be pulled apart and flushed out do both,
crank and case, it"s so simple to do,,plus you got all summer to do it....
If it were me i'd be going right threw it top to bottom.........

8,000 miles is a lot of miles!!!
No way, it's still a spring chicken! It's actually the newest sled that is kept at my father-in-laws place.
I plan to tear into and do it right. I just want to make sure I know what all is included in the "right".

If my std cylinder wasn't sleeved i would trade ya but its sleeved (both are actualy from previous owner) As was mentioned 94-96 jugs and heads are the same. You can swap that one out for a "new" nikisel cylinder for just under 200 through the number i gave you quite pricey but you will have close to that in sleeving that one (if you where to go that route) Ebay has had some go for under 100 recently but most where already sleeved or with some damage.
What's the upside/downside of sleeving?

this is what i was told, The sleeved cylinders do not allow as good heat transfer so they are not as good as the plated and less fogiving as they overheat easier. They on the other hand allow you to bore them over if you have scratches as i did with mine which can save money in the long run.
This is what i was told but i believe that it makes sense.
