today my son got his first speeding ticket. He is 16 years old and has only had his liscense 8 months. he was going 79 in a 50, just stupid of him, he deserves the ticket completly. I was just wondering if he is going to end up losing his liscense. if he does lose it he deserves it... but im just curious if he is going to.

this is in maine

thanks

in wisconsin here anything over 20mph over the speed limit is considered wreckless driving and they will take your license right on the spot. If he shows up at his court date they are usually much more leinient, often lowering the charges so maybe he could keep it and not lose as many points.

He probabally wont lose it, but insurance and all that will go up, even if the penalties for being a new driver is more stiff than an expereinced driver. In Canada, we have a demerit system, not sure what its liek in Maine, but chances are that he might be excused or something. Even though 79 in a 50 is freakin fast!

It would be gone in Ia as they have a 20 and over policy, and a zero tolerence for under aged drivers. Friend of mine just lost her license fo 6 months for not having her glasses on with a glasses restriction on her licence. Iowa is tough. Maxdlx

you may want to pull his license (you have the power, hes a minor) if your insurance company gets wind of it, they'll crank your rates. but sometimes insurance companys never find out, they didn't for me.

it is possible, in NY your under probation for a peroid of time any moving violations would mean losing your liscense, but will more than likely hurt you insurance, you may want to speak with your DA for a plea bargain

I imagine he was actually doing much more than 79mph, and the cop dropped it to 29 over so that he would be able to keep his license.

I thought it seemed to be a suspicious number myself. For my first ticket the cop dropped it down to 15km/h over so I wouldn't loose any points but I did have to pay a fine.

You should try to fight it even if he is guilty. When you fight it, they have an informal hearing and sometimes the officer that wrote the ticket does not show up and they have to throw it out. I had the good fortune of that when I was seventeen and ran a red light.

In Wisconsin, A snowmobile is considered an off road vehicle, and a ticket for excessive speed does NOT go on your driving record. Even if it was on a road, trust me I know!

I am assuming he was driving a car? not on a sled? my kids first ticket was at 16. 5 over got him an $65 fine or something like that. but it also extended his probation period for a year. his insurance went up 35% I am just thankful the officer was kind enough to only write it for 5 over.

It took him 8 months? I got my first court invatation in 3, who cares what we think, what I think is he needs to find himself a lawyer, get it reduced, and if it costs him alot of money to keep his driving privileges, he'll learn his lesson..............

if its in maine he will loose it most likely. 20over is driving to endanger and 30 over it is auto jail time. im 16 and driving thats stupid of him to do 79 in a 50. the most i got over is 10 and thats only when no one is around and conditions are fine.

Very simple.. Get a lawyer to go to court and get it knocked down to a lesser speed/or ticket charge. If your lucky it will be marked down to a parking ticket. The lawyer will cost you around 100 bucks depending, as will the ticket. If you don't get a lawyer to knock it down you will be screwed for insurance if and when they get wind of it and your son is definitely cooked for awhile. Can't go wrong with a lawyer doing the dirty work.. It's a ticket not a murder.. By the way I live in new york and speek from experience, my first ticket was 88 in a 55 three weeks after I get my license, even though I didn't have it on me at the time..and it got worse from there. Lawyer got me out every time. I gave up the stupid driving skill by the way. It's expensive!
