will my problems ever stop?

hey all.

just got back from pittsburg. got there friday AM, things were ok, trails ended up dissapearing once the rain started. As you may or may not know, i just had a whole new top end put in my old girl (99 srx 700). Got about 30 miles on it, and going up a hill, it was revving to like 5 grand and not going anywhere. i smelled a burning belt so stopped and popped the hood, and sure enough, the belt was cooking. for some reason the secondary clutch was stuck open....what would cause this? threw a new belt on and cleared the track and it was fine.

for another 5 miles anyway.



coming back from canada, i started hearing a terrible grinding/clanking coming out of my engine compartment, so i killed it immediately. smelled what smelled almost like burning tranny fluid coming from the mag side....and sure enough, a red fluid was dripping out the bottom. i'm assuming this is gear oil? when i took the belt off to get towed, i started it up, and the motor sounded fine, the noise was definately out of the drive chain (well at least i think). and ideas of what could have happened here? and how involived is it to take a look once i get the exhaust out?


to add to the terrible weekend, my buddies bumper broke while towing me, so i had to wait in the woods for 3 hours for him to come pick me up off of rt 3 right before the canadian border.....ugh. this is really frustrating.....my first sled, and my first trip the motor seizes, and now this......

Sounds like MY last year to me!!

Here is my story:

I was riding my sled on a local lake with a friends or 2 then all of sudden a bog in my engine and the engine quites. I find out later that my crank went. I soon found another engine and fixed it. Rode it for about 50 more miles to brake the engine in and all. So, I trailered my sled a week later with my father and started on a local trail. As soon as I started to ride it, I started to smell my belt burning. So I put my hood up and my primary clutch is cracked almost inhalf. So I trailered it back to my garage and got a new primary clutch. Two days after that I go for a ride over to my cousins house. He comes out and notices that my Rear suspenion shock broke inhalf. So I baby it back to the garage. At this point I was pissed at everything. So I get back to the house and got the Shock from a fellow rider and TY member, WANASRX. So I put the shock on and then rode it into town to get some gas. So I am making my aventure of the side of the road and ended up hitting the guard rail and completly bending my trailering arm. At that point, I gave up on the year and parked it for the rest of the winter that we had.

If you are having that kind of luck then that really sucks buddy!!!! I do know how you feel.

for the clucth sticking open is u either blroke a ramp on ur iner sheeve like i did or ur ur spring broke. otehr than that tehres no reason i can think of why teh secondary would stay open. oter then mabel an old bely that went all teh way down and got hot cause it was so skinny and stock to the clutch. as for ur chaincase the clanking sound could be the belt. if tehres a uneven brut spot in teh bely it will make a clunk clucnk clunk soound u hear from ur chain case. also check to see if ur front heat exchanger protectors are secure and in place. that will also make a grinding or clunkin sound that might sound like its comeing from ur chain case. if not thoes two u blew ur chain from being too lose or tight or threw a baring in teh jack or drive shaft. least likey senario is ur bolt back oyt on the drive shaft and ur chain is all crooked and grinding. in that case if tahst all it is ur lucky cause alot mroe could have gone IE(chaincase cover and or chaincase, gears and so forth:been there and it sucks) take ur primary off and take it apart and inspect the spring, helix, slides and both shves for any noticable defecs. if non found then go to the chaincase. check the gears for any ware and the chain for any broken links. if evey think there checks out and u ahve a new belt on and it continuses it then its eitehr in ur primary, a baring, or some where in ur track/skid
 
yea definately a bad way to get into the sport....this is my first sled, and to be honest this has made me not enjoy it all that much.....and it doesnt help that i'm the only yamaha in the group so thats ALL i hear about.

terret, the noise is definately coming out of the chain case. there was red fluid leaking out the mag side of the sled, and the only fluid that i don't know what it looks like is the gear oil, but i know that no other fluids on the sled are red
 
the belt probably got stuck in the secondary because you're chaincase was locking up and the secondary couldn't turn and the primary was shifting, I have cases if you need one

Has the sled seen any GOOD pre season maintance latley..seems to me
not..lot of that stuff is pre maintance fixable...
 
daman, when i first bought it i did a compression test and it was fine, cleaned the carbs and power valves, changed the gear oil. the lack of maintainance is not on my part, i take great pride in the way i take care of my equipment.

That's good to hear...not many people do....you Just must be plauged..

I go through cluches every year,clean and inspect..Nothing gets over looked
 
well i got the cover off.....looks like it is my best case scenario?

the head of the bolt that holds the bottom sprocket in place has sheared off. both sprockets and chain are intact and look to be unharmed. the only damage appears to be to the cover itself, where the head of the bolt was held in place spinning around. any ideas what would have caused this? can i just get the shaft of the old bolt out and put a new one in and be good to go?
 
as long as teh treds in the shaft arent striped u should be good. if u ahve a hole in ur chaincase whee the bolt head sent threw like mine did u caa fix it for about 5 bucks. u take a flat headed bolt like a button head. get one as thin as u can. has to be liek a 1/8th inch thick or less. at most 3/16th then take some silocone gasket make and smer it on the botob of the head of the bolt. and take a washer on teh out side and do the same thing. then tighte it down with the nut. had to do it on my 500 and it never leaked,. other then that if ur case is leaking just get a new cover.
 
Are you sure your drive shaft is ok? Not broken/bad bearing? There should not be much sideways thrust on that bolt as the bearing on the oppisite side has a locking collar that should prevent the drive shaft from walking in and out.
