More Exciter Questions

I took my sled out this weekend, running at 8800 feet. I bought from a guy that lived at 9500 feet and ran up at Rabbit Ears pass (10-11K).

1.The sled will only run, poorly with the choke on full. This would seem to me that it's getting too much air for the air/fuel mixture and that I would need to jet up a size or two to add more fuel to the mixture. Am I right?
The carbs do need to be cleaned, I know that.

2.Also, it's an 87, and I thought the all came with butterfly carbs. This has Mikuni round slides. Last 3 digits from the vin are 586. May 1986 build date?
What should I jet it at for 8000-10500 feet?

3:PJ=Pilot Jet, MJ=Main Jet PWAJ=????

4: How the heck do I get the airbox off to get the carbs off? Looks like I'll have to take the entire front shroud and gastank off.

I know I'll have more questions...Thanks guys.

That sled came with round sides there right,,first you need to give them carbs a good cleaning try it then come back with some Q,s...:)
 
My book shows 87 having butterfly carbs and 88 and newer having slide type. If it is an 87, maybe somebody put the the newer style on.

I would assume PWAJ stands for "power jet", or "power air jet". The 87 butterfly carbs on an Exciter had a jet, banjo bolt, and tube going into the inlet side of the carb before the butterflies.
 
Ah, no, 87's came with butterflies, then in 88' there was an update kit for the 87's that was a set of 38 rounds, then they had problems with the calibration on them, we ended up changing that, we went to Q-0's, 6DH7's, 42.5 pilot, 320 mains, 2.5 slides, and that was for 900ft. so I would guess if you looked at an 88 manual for high alt jetting you would be good for up there, I would guess, 45 pilots, 250 mains? If yours is an 87 the only thing you need to watch out for is the oils cable setting, just set it wide open with a little slop in the cable, the wheel in the oil pump has the wrong stroke for the round slide stroke.

As far as getting the carbs out, take the airbox bolt out on the brake side and then if you look just in front of the gas tank flap there is a little rectangle plate that pops off and there are 2 air box screws there you take out, then the air box will move enought to get the carbs out............
 
Thanks, got the carbs out, will be cleaning them tonight. I'm hopeing the jets are stamped with sizes, so I can have a baseline for what it was jetted at.
 
if you don't notice any obvious blockage in your fuel circuts spray a solvent (wd 40) lightly around your crank seal area or carb boots,you have definately got too much air,not enough fuel
 
Well, carbs are cleaned. 250 mains, 37.5 pilots, 2 and 3/4 out on the idle screw. The pilots were very dirty. Varnished in the bowls. I'll get them back on tomorrow and let yall know how it goes.
