What yamaha snowmobiles have only three rear skid idler wheels, not four?? Newer Vipers maybe?? Also Did yamaha ever produce sleds with only two nine tooth drivers? Most I've seen have an outside driver on each side and the two middle drivers. But not this one.. Would there be any advantages or disadvantages to either??

the 97 xtc 500 has only 2 drivers and only 3 rear wheels. no advantages i can think of then maybe some weight savings but mostly disadvantages with track ratcheting and easyer misalignment

This sled only has the drivers in the middle and nothing else. In the pic there's wheels, or something on the sides. This sled has just the drivers on the shaft.. seem kinda funny to you?? Also the sled has 2004 long travel viper shocks on it in the skid, front and rear. Is that possible on a 97?? I though the vipers might have three wheels in the back?? My friend is looking at this sled and I'm not sure it's a good deal or not.

My 98 sx 700 had 2 drivers and 2 idlers on the drive axle, and only 3 idlers on the rear axle stock. Im putting srx drivers [4] on this summer. And i have viper shocks on both ends.

nothing wrong with only 3 idlers at the back. Only problem with only two drivers at the front is that the track ratchets more easily. If that becomes a problem though, it is relatively easy to get some drivers pressed on or just find a used driveshaft from and srx or viper or newer sx with 4 drivers. Problem solved.

after like 2000 they went with the 4 wheels in the back maybe sooner. as for teh 2 drivers thats a twin thing i think. they didnt need them cause there wasnt as much torque.just checked the parts diagram. the 4 drivers are for 600s and up including the 600 twin.

checked the parts diagrams some more and it looks like teh 4th wheel were just an option for the most part. even on teh 2002 viper. but i know my 2000 came with it adn so did my brotheres they might ahve just put them on stock then just because tehy were so popular

The sled is a 2000 vmax 500 sx. It might only have two drivers because it's a 500 then. The skid only having three wheels might be the same reason. Smaller twin motor = cheaper overall sled maybe.. If he get's it should he do anything with the drivers, or wheels. If so where could he get the parts?? I think it needs a newer track too so maybe it could all be done at once. Thanks for all the help!!

has the sled been modified at all or any changes? there could be only two drivers if they are the antiratchet drivers (one driver takes the place of two, which 4 goes to 2 drivers) 3 rear wheels is nothing on a 500 twin. i doubt you'll be able to derail the track with that 500, and if you do you'll really have to be tryin hard to do it. but i'm thinking its extrovert antiratchet drivers and the guy before was probably tryin to shave weight bein its just a 500. any pics would help as well to see the condition of the sled!!!

i have a 2001 sxr500. it came from the factory with only 2 drivers. mine had the 4th wheel kit already installed so i gave the one i bought to my brother for his 2002 viper that had only 3. i have a ripsaw installed on this sled and even with the stock drivers it will not ratchet. kirkswim knows i drove it hard enough to get it to ratchet and it would not ratchet at all with 1" free sag in the ripsaw.

My 01 has the anti ratchets so I wasn't sure if two stock drivers was ok or not. Apparently it's ok for the twins! I have been thinking about updating my skid to the forth wheel kit, but I don't know if I need it.

Thats normal for your sled maxout, 500's only had the two drivers.

FYI: I had only 3 rear idlers on my 2002 Viper. Now I have four. Here's why:

Last winter we were out taking a break 30+ miles north of Curtis in the U.P. and found one of my outside rear wheels GONE! The only thing left was the inside bearing race. Thank god it was on the same side as the "third" wheel otherwise I would have been screwed.

I was able to ride it 20-25mph back towards Curtis while the other 2 guys I was with hauled back to Watson's in Curtis and bought a replacement. I met them coming back as I hit the big lake and we fixed it there.

After that we added the 4th wheel to our sleds, cheap insurance.

Daman, I wasn't sure about the 500's having the two drivers because my sled has anti ratchet drivers, and the outside drivers of a viper (4 total), It was done after the upgrade to a 600. I bought it that way. My skid is off an 03 or 04 viper and it only has the three wheels. My buddy was looking at buying a 2000 500 sx and that's the sled I was asking about. It's hard to compare it with mine because of the different parts on mine. I didn't realize the newer sleds came with only three wheels, you think they would have upgraded by now. THKSNOW, After the story of the missing wheel I think I may get the forth wheel kit for my skid. I wonder how yours fell off like that.. Anybody know where to get them??
