i hear a lot about things being ported, some also being polished. Probably sounds like a really dumb question but i would just like to know all the mechanical terms on what porting and polishing really is.

thanks

Porting just involves modifying the internals of the engine in order to change the air flow characteristics. Typically, the exhaust ports are widened and raised slightly to improve top end horsepower (at the expense of a little bit of bottom end power on a non-powervalved engine). The beauty of variable exhaust valves is that they allow the engine to have low ports for strong bottom end, and taller ports for strong top end. In some cases, intake and boost ports are also widened to allow more fuel charge to enter the combustion chamber more quickly, which again allows for more power. Of course, porting an engine can only help as much as the particualar intake and exhaust combination of the application allow. Porting allows the ability to flow more air in what is essentially an air pump, but if the intake and exhaust are constrictive the gains wont be as good as they could be.
Polishing is just another means of maximizing the airflow. By taking the imperfections out of the intake and exhaust tracts caused by machining and cutting, turbulence is decreased and maximum airflow is increased, again allowing for more power availability.
Hope that helps!
