Phazer speedo bearing

The last time I had my Phazer out I disintigrated the drive shaft bearing on the speedo side. It's completly gone and the shaft chewed up a nice hole.

Has anyone had this happen to them? How difficult is the repair? Do I need any special tools?

A professional repair is not an option. I've done quite a bit of work to this sled to keep her going and aint quittin' now so any help would be appreciated.

No special tools. Although you may want to take your sled somewhere where cussin' won't be a problem. A repair manual would be helpful. You could probably down load the info from the net. I did my first one years ago without a book and without help, yeah I did do alot of cussin'!
 
How does the shaft look? It is possible to be damaged beyond reuse.
If it wore into the tunnel and plates, it will probably work okay with just new plates - unless it wore through one of the bolts.
Loosen the track all the way. Ask any questions here as you go.
 
I had this happen with my Ovation. I just dropped the suspension out and removed the shaft. I thought the shaft was screwed because it looked worn enevenly but it was actually just the inside of the bearing still on the shaft. I just heated it up and hammered it off and put a new bearing on. My flanges were worn pretty bad so I just got 2 new ones and bolted them in. It isn't that hard a job should only take a couple of hours.
 
You will probably need to buy 2 new plates if the driveshaft chewed up the hole. Stock uses only 1 plate if I can remember correctly, the tunnel has a lip on the inside to act as a bearing retainer. Just get 2 new plates to hold the bearing and install from clutch side, the bolts are long enough.
 
The hole didn't wear through the bolts on the plate so I think I'm ok there. Do I need to open up the chain case to get the shaft out?

Also, has anyone been on the parts diagrams on the yamaha website? (stupid question) When Iv'e tried to use it the diagrams don't match up with the parts lists. It's a real pain in the butt.

No you don't have to take the shaft out. Just loosen the track way up to take all the pressure off of the shaft and raise the back off the ground, take off the secondary, remove the speed housing (hope that didn't get chewed up) and their should be 2 set screws in whats left of the bearing. Take those out, you may have to take a pice of sand paper and smooth out the end of the shaft to get the rest of the bearing off, replace with new bearing and set screws, probably new speed key, replace speed housing, secondary, belt and tighten track and you should be good to go. I had to do this on my moms venture but she didn't tell me and my dad that the speedo quit working and we had to put a new speed housing on. I also had to do it in my 98 SRX last winter. Just a hint if the speedo quits 9 out of 10 times the bearing is shot. Hope this helps and good luck!
