Reed Valves Service????

How long before reed valves need Repalacing? I am doing some maintenance on my SRX700 with 4200 miles, I have read aftermarket reeds are not worth it, it has been said oem yamaha are the best? ((Thanks for any help...

I'd go ahead and do it,and yes OEM is the way to go, IMO..
 
Thanks daman, I just got done fogging the motor, I thought while I had the air box off & the cabs & intake are accessable it would not be a bad idea, the service manual doesnt give any info on when to repace them, I would hate to have one snap on me next season. I remember on my old Phazers I would replace them about this time & what a differance it would make I ran w/ Boysen great product.

yup good time to do it then wile ya have it opend up, thats when i do them
3-4000 miles, i love stock so OEM always for me, should be nice and crisp
next year, good jood... ;)!
 
i'd go with carbontech reeds. not the full out vforce or boysen, but i've nevere heard any complain of any problems with carbontech's reads (if i'm getting their name right?) check em out, may be cheaper than stock and they are supposed to last longer and what not.
 
Inspect your current reeds first. If they seat well, and are free of cracks, you do not need to worry about replacing them. If you need/want to replace them, I would definetaly recomend the oem Yamaha reeds. This is just my opinion, but it does seems to be the general concensus.
 
Go with oem, and replace them when you notice that the tips aren't sealing against the cages any longer, or even if they are just slightly touching, throw in some new ones. Used several aftermarkets, didnt think any were any better than new oems, just more money and dont last as long because they are more brittle.
 
no no no, re-read my post. i said JUST the reads, not the whole out vforce boysen thing (because i believe the guy was asking on reeds alone and not cages) and i said i would go with carbon tech because i haven't heard a complaint about em, and a lot of positives on how much longer they last before they stop sealing. vforce's have been known to chip at the ends (on earlier models, i believe they have updated versions now) and i haven't heard much on boysen but both are still a lot of change for minimal results unless your looking for that last extra hp you can squeeze out.
 
I'v got 10'000 k on my carbon tech reeds and haven't had a problem. The carbs come off every year for cleaning and I check the reeds, they still look like new.
 
My original reeds had bout 5,500 miles on them, i replaced them just because it made me feel better. They were still sealing good and werent weak at all. I say check them if they seal good, and arent really weak run them!
