Hi! I recently bought a 1985 VMax with only 3400 miles. After going through the whole bike and getting it back to the street, I thought about the gasoline situation back in those days, and can remember Regular gas was Leaded. My question to anyone who knows is: does my '85 VMax require Leaded gas, or was Unleaded OK by that time? If they did need leaded gas, what model year did they change to Unleaded? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!! --Joe

Leaded?
I thought leaded gas went away in the mid to late 1970s at the latest?

I'm pretty sure there was still leaded gas in the mid 80's........I seem to remember putting it in my 1st car....If you're right I'd feel a little better......my '85 owners manual says "Regular" gas......

Youll be okay running regular unleaded.

There are still some lead additives available, But as I recall, my 78 jeep used unleaded gas.... and I am even more sure my 86 jeep required unleaded gas
and especially on a bike motor I would expect that they are built a bit better that the lead woulndn't have made that much of a differance anyway

Being the old facker that I am I can tell you that my 1973 LeMans Sport required unleaded gasoline. By 1985 everything with a gas motor required unleaded.

anything without a catalitic converter can use leaded. anything with hardened valve seats can use unleaded (virtualy everything from 70s on and some even earlier)
