Would their be any benifit from using a 2001 srx cdi unit in a 2002 piped viper, bender, slp, Aaen, pipes ect..... Would it help prevent burn downs ?

I would suggest it only with bender pipes, they run @ 8500 rpm. The SRX box will retard the timming after 8700. It would more than likely be benificial too run. I'm almost positive you would see a huge increase in fuel mileage, along with part throttle response to die for. The current viper box has alot of timming around 8000 rpm, 8 degrees more than the SRX box. The viper can get away using alot more timming because the pipe does not fill the cylinder as well as the SRX. The reliability would be increased, provided the jetting was tweaked in.

If I'm not mistaken the srx CDI will cause a loss of power in almost any part of the rom range, like it was stated above if your pipes run above 8500 rpm you'll be pulling a ton of timing compare to the viper box.

The viper timing spike is at 8500, this where the jetting is set high to account for, everywhere else I think the extra timing gives more power, its too bad there isn't a way to cut timing at that specific rpms by just a few degrees.

Actually the biggest difference in timming is @ 8000 rpm. The viper box is 8-9 degrees higher than the SRX box at this point. At 8500 the timming is only 5 degrees more than the SRX box. Like I said, the SRX timming is perfect for a sled with tripple pipes on pump gas. You have to use pipes that run below 8600 rpm. Bender's are the only aftermarkets that do. So if you have benders, the benifits would be great. I'm positive you could jet way down, especially on the pilots, with the SRX box. This would give better mileage and power than with the current viper box.

Extra timming does give more power to a certain extent. Actually if you were running straight racing fuel, the viper box would be close to what you need.
Finding the best combination for the fuel you are running is what we are talking about.

The tripple pipes fill the cylinder with alot more mixture than the single pipe, thus more power. But this also causes increased running compression, where the pipe is working best. The stock single pipe can use alot more timming with pump gas because running compression is alot lower. When you switch to the tripple pipes you need to do something to prevent detonation, pipe manufactures have chosen to richen the mixture to prevent detonation(Cheapest). The right way would be to adjust the timming so a fuel mix ratio of 12:1 can be utilized. At the price of fuel, the SRX box looks like a great deal, probablly paying for itself in a couple of weekends!!!!!!

If you call bender they would say HOGWASH, our pipes work great the way we tell you to run them, thus not admitting there is a better way. Then say to yourself, well why does an SRX have the same power, and 3-4 MPG better?

I would only do this mod with the bender pipes, all others are running too much RPM for the SRX box.
I guess we will never know until someone tries it out.

So there is no way to use like a MSD box or anything to go in between the viper CDI and the coils to retard timing? I'm so used to tuning timing with the tap of the keyboard on cars that its frustrating we can't do it in the CDI of a snowmobile.

You know what would be cool, is using the DCS system from a 04 viper but figure out how to use EGT as the input verus the knock sensor...

slp pipes also make great power in the 85-8800 range, like all the others they just made you run then higher to retarde timing.

the lowest i could run on my slp pipes with out a high idle problem with the viper box was 45, sled ran better on 47.5 and 50pilots depending on the temp.

with the srx pipes and viper box, i ran 40pilots and i think i could have run smaller in a pinch, never got to try them. with the srx pipes and srx box, pilots and slides didnt seem to matter. i used srx and viper slides, needles and nozzles. didnt see a difference in running or fuel milage using either.

i think it is more of a pipe thing than a timing thing with the pilots you can run.

I was gonna talk some about timing and pipe design and pilot jets but I keep looking at those blue bombs bouncing in someones avatar and keep losing my train of thought....boing,....boing.....boing........................ :o|

I've got a new set of Bender triple viper pipes if your looking. send me an email

I've run the srx box on the viper and it works good with the triple pipes, get's alot more grunt like the srx stock rather than the vipers pipey powerband with triple pipes and a stock box.

Im so confused ! What im really looking for is reliability in a piped viper and nothing too loud. Im thinking slp or Aaen pipes.
But also i dont want fuel cost to go through the roof.
Srx pipes sound like a good option but im also looking for bolt on and go type of pipes like the Aaens.

The best option would be the SRX pipes & 2001 CDI. The extra effort pays off going this route IMO. Ebay has this stuff all the time, and you have all summer to get the stuff, and put it in.
