it depends on what sled you are installing it on
not to thread jack, but if I wanted to put a hydraulic brake on a 96 600 xt, is it possible? easy? etc...

That was one of the big differences I noticed when I "borrowed" sleds this past winter after mine lost a cylinder. They all had hydraulic brakes and mine does not. Wow, what a difference in feel. I know i don't use the brake much, but it would be a cool mod.

the reason I asked what sled is, if you want to put a 97 V4 brake assy on an earlier V4 and make it look correct you need the chaincase shafts gears and alot of other stuff. If you want to just put a hyd brake on an earlier sled there is easier ways to do that with other brakes, I used to sell a kit to put hyd brakes on earlier sleds and used wilwood stufflike from a a mid 90's AC

I think I can get a lever, master cylinder, hose, and caliper from a 97vmax. Will I just need to fab a bracket to attach to the chain case? Will the stock rotor be ok?

Well If I was going to go to the trouble to install a hyd brake I wouldn't use any 97 parts..........what rotor do you have

well if you want to do that and make it look like it came that way then you rear chaincase half and the brake parts. If you just want to have a hyd brake, there's easier ways to do it, just make a bracket and hang the caliper in the back. I may have some of those kit parts left
Why wouldn't you go with 97 parts? I thought in 97 they started with hyd. brakes? Will your vmax4 brackets work a on a regular vmax?

thats kinda the way we did the Wilwood kit, it will mount on 5&600's also. I rotated the caliper to the rear just to move it out of site and it would have hit the motor on my 900 triple. The problem you're gonna have as this guy is, is the spacing of the brake pads and the movement of the rotor. You can see in the pics that the inner piston is hanging out too far and it is not centered. Thats because is caliper is designed for a wider rotor and a fixed rotor, after using it will not stay centered and if the piston comes out too far it will cock and bind up as well as the pad could rotate slightly and bind. Now if you did something like this and used the newer rotor and afixed it to the shaft that would work.
As far as using 97 parts, the 97' brakes had an issue with not returning correctly and they would wear the pads quickly as well as wear one side and not the other because one side would stick. If you're going to try to use Yammie parts make sure they are newer pieces. I used Wilwood parts because they were the ticket at the time coming on T Cats, this was in 94'.

that makes sense with the 97 parts. I was thinking of using yammie parts (or at least the lever and master cylinder). I'm not opposed to something else if there is a better fit.

Actually, you can use the Yammie master with another caliper. I was going to put the Yammie master on my 94 to make it look more Yamahaish, with the wilwood caliper. Again, don't get a 97 master either the stroke was changed, part of the not returning problem. You could use the Yammie caliper but to make it correct you need to narrow it or use the thicker rotor, again the wilwood caliper has the correct spacing for the earlier Yamaha rotors, just depends how much time you want to spent doing it.
So a Yamaha Master Cylinder & Lever with a hose (possibly custom) down to an AC/Wilwood caliper will fit the older style sleds?

For those looking to do this mod, I have TWO complete sets of Brembo brakes from Ski-doo models. Kits are 100% complete, includes lever block, taillamp switch, hose, caliper, pads, everything! I was going to install hyd brakes on a Polaris Widetrak but instead decided to part company with it.
I have not seen a worthy cause to offer these for until now, but if you Vmax4 types would like an upgrade, the kits are matte black and do not have any Bombardier markings on them, just Brembo.
