1999 Phazer 500 Track ?

Hello everyone, I am new here and need a little help. I have a 1999 Phazer 500, fan cooled and not the deluxe verision. I recently broke the right side slide rail and am going to replace it. While I am doing that I am going to put a new track on it, but I would like to put a track on it that has a little longer lugs on it. Any help would be great, thanks!!
 
Look at my sle din my pic man, thats your sled right there, except a year newer and different paint, other than that, thats the way itll look.

BTW, she hauls like a champ, have a lot of mods done to it, Just aks if you want more details.

You dont get the long track push in corners liek you would expect, and I ahve the Ripsaw with 108 1.325" stainless woddys studs.

WHAT :dunno: that's a Phazer - you asked me before about mine - I never noticed. I looked at your picture and had no idea. It looks fantastic – what imagination.

Aren’t you embarrassed to show that when all the talk is big stuff. ;)!

Mine is stock except the engine is to factory dimensions. The only thing off was the cylinder height – not much. We have the same skis –Kevin sponsored us 99/00. Our SX500R is on the cover of his 2000 brochure.

We used the big family sled rear transfers rods as the washer stops were farther apart. If we do anything, I’d like to lower the chain case so we can lower the front of the skid to get some weight off the skis.

The track is stock – rolls nice, the clutch has seen extensive work – it snaps to max RPM and sits there in any conditions if it’s pinned. We have it soft mid range and it up shifts slightly pulling the rpm down for better mileage. We had a box full of Advant-Edge helixes to work with – I’d say they are about like about 100% better than stock.

The carb has a good range of jets and its pretty well stock except for the low speed circuit.

Certainly – it does not hold a candle to the looks of yours. I may be swayed by the new Phazer. Maybe???

Are you talking about my sled?, lol

If so, then no, not afraid at all to show my sled, despite its lack of sheer horsepower. It holds its own easily on trails.

And yes you are right - no problems on the trails - and on hard pack - it takes a good sled to pull away from the Phazer.

No broken hoses either :dunno:

I really love the way it looks, and prefer the look of it over the newer sleds, but am really starting to like that Apex/Attak, Vector stuff. I find im much more intimidated by them than my proaction trailingarm chassis sled.

Something l like alot with the fan cooled is that if I ever throw a stud, its not going to puncture a hose or heat exchanger or anything.

With everything the way it is,(stock engine/clutching) I drag everyone, and so far a 98 SRX700 has came the closest to beting me for the first 300 ft or so. Iv taken 583's down the lake, up until I tap out at 78mph, exciter570, pantera600, Zl500, all the polaris 500's, and the list goes on. Everyone is so surprised. Its all in the traction and lightness I sopose and the way my suspension is set up. All this at a stock 19 000kms, without anything replaced engine or clutch wise.
 
I love hearing those stories! They make me so proud of the Yamaha fan cooled sleds! I think I'd like to drag some sleds next year... with my new studs and all. I kill my bro's 500 Ski-Doo Liquid, but he has no studs.
 
I raced a red 500 formula, and it really sucked compared to the 583. Im not kidding or over exaggerating at all, I took all of them right down the lake until a few seconds when im maxed, then they pass me. But surprisingly, its not much more that they pass me by. Im doing 78 mph on the GPS and theyre passing me doing 82mph. But it takes a good sized lake for them to catch, especially the non studded sleds!

When ever I bring up the stories of me smoking the 583 down the lake, my buddies who own it always change the subject, hahahaa

BTW, I have no pics but you should see how far I carry the skis!. Not exactly high but long, like at least 150 feet everytime.

Man, I have yet to get my skis to lift off the ground! I think it must be set up to be glued to the snow for tight trail riding?!? My bro's Doo lifts off on acceleration, but that's only if he gets traction. His top 92 on the speedo outruns me pretty quick. We've never truely raced though, maybe next year.
 
Ya, its setup like that, but its preety good liek that. For me, I have the sled setup to not wheelie in corners when on the gas too much, so I cant still rod it. Just enough to carry the skis a little off the ground on take off, but for a far distance.

Im not sure there is much you can do to get yours to wheelie, well nothing really thatd make a drastic effect, besides cutting off your limiter straps. My friend did that on an old 488 polaris fan longtrack and it wheelies so well, nearly straight up, but its a beater sled and sucks on the trails with no straps, so I dont reccomend it, lol
 
I'll never cut the straps, but a Yamaha tuning site suggested how to lengthen/shorten the straps in the front and back to get different results.
Might do some tweaking next year!
We should ride togehter one day man, how close are you to district 10 on the OFSC? Which district do you ride in?
 
Not that far at all, in fact, iv ridden in district 11, which is right next to yours. I sometimes do a loop with my family from Espanola(where I live), to Rockys Lake Wannepitae, then to Shining Tree, then to New Liskeard, then to Northbay, then Back home, and on the way from northbay, we cross the french river bridge and pickerel river bridge, which are the big bridges you always see pictures of.

I ride in district 12 all the time, but I sometimes get out to other ones. Ya sure, itd be great to ride with someone new. Would have gone on alot more trips this year but they all got canceled, or just didnt happen becuase one Polaris Indy 500 Classic longtrack blew a crank and broke rings, then on another attempt, a different Indy 500 kept having coolant and carburation problems, then on our biggest trip, the night before, my friend on another polaris Indy Trail blew his track. I never liekd Polaris before, but after this year, I REALLY dont liek them, so its a good thing your riding a yamaha.

Here is a reference map to show you which and other districts there is and which one im in. Im in district 12, and also have ridden in 13 a few times.

I ride in district 7 or 8 when I get a chance. ;)!

I think the cool looking Phazer (485) gets its skis up thanks to the extended track and chassis – more leverage. :whine:

We put a set of transfer rods from a Yamaha family sled – it had the washers up a little higher. You can take yours off grind and re-weld new ones up about ¼” higher.

I’m not into transfer rods as the….wait forget it – I don’t want to open a can of worms.

The design of the skid has the front ALWAYS higher up then the back – unlike the Polaris that offers full transfer.

We did a Yamaha suspension article for Hot Sled magazine in 2000. Maybe I can re-print it as the magazine is no longer going.

You can’t re-drill and lower the front bolt as the tip of the skid rail will get stuck in the track. Maybe if you put 2 wheels there after lowering it – then she would lift!

That chassis also has a ton of bump steer – it’s OK the way it is. It has almost 3” from bottom to top. The problem (if any) is tie rod angle. We had to keep stock to keep it legal (snocross) so we bolted the tie rod on the on the other side steering yoke at the bottom – that took away almost 2”. Not recommended (don’t do it) as things are pretty tight and if not done right you will crash bad if it breaks. And could die.

Removing some bump steer helps stop the thing from darting all over the trail.
 
if you align it according to bethviper's specs in the tec pages it is a totally different animal. did my sxr500 to his specs and it was a totally different sled to drive. re did it to stock specs and almost wiped on a tree. just ask yammiman (prob spelled wrong). he was waitin on the big CRUNCH as he was following me at the time.
 
Yes – alignment is always important. I align mine with the skid as a reference. :dunno:

But – I’m not talking about alignment – BUMP STEER is when the suspension travels thru its range and the skis move left to right or right to left on their own. The tip of the ski will move in a horizontal plane, on that chassis, a little over 3 inches - in full travel

If you’re riding on smooth hardpack – it’s of little notice – but when the front is working hard – you can feel it.
