The 99's V-Max's were triples. The 97 and 98's were twins. The twins were pretty good on fuel. 10 12 mpg but the oil consumption was the hard part. The oil pumps were subject to failure where they would go wide open. A normal operating twin still used more oil than any triple out there.
I had a 98 600 and the gas was 10-12mpg. The oil consumption seemed fair, not to bad. Not sure on the 99, they were triples. Check out a 700 viper 03 or newer, better sled overal plus the gas milage is great. Very reliable sled.

I have a 1996 vmax 600dx twin in mint shape and from what use I have had with it, [bought it at the end of season] it seems to be about 10-12 mpg or approx 85-90 miles per tank. Oil consumption is maybe a little high but i am going to dial down the pump a little...not too much though. The worst thing is a fair bit of blue smoke when first started but not really noticable after that.

Ended up buying the sled..Turns out its a 97 VMax SX...13000 km..Sounds like a lot but the prvious owner had the top end redone after 7000 km.. It has ohlins on the front and an M10 suspension underneath with a fox clicker..had it running a couple of times (love the smell of 2 stroke oil) but wont be able to tell what it really runs like until the snow flys...cant wait..

Buy a triple, Alot better on gas!!
Depends on how you ride it. Had a 97 600 twin and the gas mileage wasnt bad but the oil pump failed and it would DRINK oil. I still dont understand how it melted down consuming more oil than fuel.

mileage
I"ve got a 97 V-Maxx 600 XTC and was getting 12mpg before blowing the motor. I have quite a bit of oil in the gas for the break-in and plan on burning it all before I fill it again and change the plugs. The other half has a Rev 600 HO and we aren"t too far apart in the mileage per fill.
