someone hi jacked my ebay account and listed 45 items for sale on it so i went to the ebay help thing and they said if your account has been stolen to retract all bids you didn't place and end all listings you didn't list so i ended all the listings but i got about $50 in listing fees now so i contacted ebay through their help thing on the account theft page they said they would send me a message in about 24-48 hours about crediting me for all those insertion fees and i spent about an hour deleting all of the messages i got on those items and ending all the listings and clearing out the 100 and some messages i got from ebay i got a message for each item saying the listing was listed and i got another message for each item saying it has been sucessfully deleted so i changed my ebay password and passwors question i also changed my email password and paypal password does anyone have any advice and has anyone else had this happen to them

NEVER, EVER, EVER reply to ANY e-mails that appear to be from E-bay. Regardless of what the e-mail says, E-bay won't ever ask you for your username and password through e-mail. Have your computer scanned for viruses, spyware, keyboard loggers, etc.

I get those fake e-bay e-mails too. People on other forums have been reporting their e-bay accounts being hacked too (alot lately). I signed up to ebay about 3 years ago but have never used it and probably never will, is there any way to delete my account?

i got on the live chat thing with ebay and they gave me credit for all the stuff and removed the block they put on my account when they thought it was a third party on it so i got everything back to normal now

i have been getting strange emails that look like they are from ebay and even some from pay pal i made the mistake of opening one up one time and had my puter crash.... i was informed to send any funny or fishy looking emails to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com, they will notify you almost imediately if it is original or a phony, then they take care of it from there!
also there is a virus protection thinger that is totally free and is probably the best one out there, i was told about it by plum choice , the guys who helped get my puter back up and running also it wa son a national radio program "clark howard".... the program is Ad-Aware SE it is free and works great! just do a search for it and you will find it
www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware ...... that should do it!

I'll second the 'Ad-aware' program. After using the free program for about 2 years, I bought the pay version which allows for real-time adware blocking (runs in the background). You have to run the free version regularly and it removes stuff well but doesn't prevent it from getting on your computer in the first place. The pay version keeps it off completely. That coupled with Norton anti-virus and the Google toolbar with pop-up blocker keep me surfin without too much headache.

I had the same thing happend to me. I have never opened any ebay emails that didnt look right.

I made the 100 items sold and somehow someone took over my account. I changed all my passwords to paypal, ebay, hotmail and everything else. Since then, no problems.

Spybot S&D is good too. In my experiences though, Ad-Aware finds the more "potent" spyware. Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1 has been replaced by Windows Defender which is another program I use on all of our computers.

Download it here:

I prefer Avast Anti-virus instead of AVG, but both are good.

On a side note, be on the lookout guys, I just read yesterday that there's scammers out there sending e-mails that look like they're from the IRS. The e-mail says you are eligible for a tax refund. They want you to give them your personal information via the internet. The IRS won't ever e-mail or call you asking for personal information. They will only ask for personal information through postal mail. The e-mail looks VERY real but it is NOT. Here's some more information about it and what to do if you're a victim.

I did a lot of research after a total system crash a couple years ago. I run the following software, and have had very minimal problems since.
AdAware SE-free to download
Spyware Blaster-free
Spyware Guard-free
SpybotSD-free
XoftSpy-not free, but reasonable, and takes care of things AdAware and Spybot won't.
Run a good Firewall/Antivirus such as Symnatec
Keep all of the above updated or they are useless, as new crap is coming out to infect you all the time.
If you are confident in your abilities at fixing your registry to get rid of Spyware/Trojans, etc use Hijack This, free download, but keep in mind anything you delete is GONE. There is lots of good reading on the web to help you fix your registry if infected. You may be required to boot your computer in safe mode, and use Hijack This or Regedit to get rid of some of the nasty ones.
Also free is CleanUp 4.0 which will get rid of all the useless temp files, etc stored on your computer. If you spend much time on the net, you won't believe how much space this program can free up on your drive. ;)!

Good post SRXer. All good points.

Some other programs that I like are:

RegClean(Registry Cleaner/fixer)
XP-Antispy(Anti-syware program)
Tweak UI(Allows you to easily tweak system settings without the chance of screwing up your registry)
Script Sentry(Monitors scripts running on your computer)
Cookie Jar(Cookie management software)
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0(Analyzes your computer for missing updates and other security vulnerabilities)
