Viper hard of starting

My viper was very hard to start right and the end of the year, It took like 25 pulls for it to start cold and 3 to start when warm, When it was running right 3 to start cold and 1 to start warm. This is a fuel pump problem right?
 
Can't say for sure that it's a fuel pump problem, but my 02 Viper starts very good when it's cold and and warm ( have to squeeze the throttle while pulling when it's warm or it won't start at all). I have noticed that it's very hard to pull over when it's really cold out since I switched over to Amsoil.
 
Fairly sure its not the fuel pump. Have you tried cleaning the carbs and checking the floats?

We took the fuel pump out and it was frozen and ever since that it did not start right.

Well...I would put the fuel pump back in and then try to start it...it should fire right up in a couple of pulls. :jump: :jump:
seriously.....
If it runs right once started I wouldn't think it was related to the fuel pump.

If the carbs havn't been cleaned in a while start there...its quick, simple and should be done every fall anyways. Make sure the carbs are adjusted properly and then go from there.

We cleaned the bowls out last year.
 
dont they have a vacuum hose of the crankcase?, maybe it split same time the pump froze

Clean out more than just the bowls. You have to remove both the main jets and exspecially the pilot jets....they gum up real easy. spray them out with carb cleaner and look thru them....you should see light shining thru it. If there is no light run a thin wire thru it to clear the blockage and spray it out again with the carb cleaner. Like I said...start with the basics.

Did you do the fuel pump update to prevent it from freezing up again? You can check the vacuum line but it shouldn't split due to freezing...it would expand.

Can I get a link to step by steps to cleaning my carbs?? We just ordered a new pump anyway so we will put that in...would i have to still do the update to the new pump?

I read your post to clean the sx-r carbs, is it the same as the viper carbs? When re-installing the needles how tight ot turns?

Now, I do my own and save large...My 03 Starts great cold but requires a slight throttle. I tried different things ( one thing at a time ) reset to specs..I can live with a little throttle...sounds a little cool too...LOL

They do the same, but are different, same parts maybe in a different place, Steps ae all the same, but a clear discription none the less...now for your RE-INSTALLING the needle??? it just hangs there through the slide with clips...or was it the seat the part that the needle goes through-then it's tight,but not overtight...now did you mean the fuel screw-it's what ever the specs are for your sled...or did you mean the bowl screw-than it's tight. not over tight...hope this helps out if not post pics of your concern and we will try and help out...good luck
