Have a friend who owned a 2002 viper er and is thinking of buying an 04 viper s. Has anyone else done this, and is it a huge difference or basically the same?

same engine, just a whole lot better looking, better suspension, It also has dcs, and 2 years newer.
I thought I heard there was more aggresive clutching in the "s" model

Replace the rear suspension in the 02 with an M10 or Expert X and he will save money and have a much better ride than the stock 02 or 04.

I had 2 02's and now a Viper S
Changes are:
Ohlins up front, rear shock has progressive dampening, ripsaw, newer style hand/thumb warmer controls, relocated choke, DCS, more aggresive saddleless skis, softer seat, rear heat exchanger, comes with a skid plate, same engine and clutching.......feels like a completely different Viper thou.

From some old mags and results the 2002 viper was the fastest of the bunch.S.S.Viper said:Wow...I didn't know the clutching was improved...hmmm...I shoulda cashed in more pop bottles for that sucker...oh well...I guess thats why I get to tinker on mine..
I heard the 03 was faster than the 02 because it had a hotter ignition in it but one thing is for sure with that viper s the ripsaw will slow it down big time, I think it will be lucky to hit 105 on its best day.

My S will run with the old older short lug SXR 700 and walk away from it up top - stock vs stock.

Stock Viper S ripping accrossed Otsego Lake I hit 122 on the speedo. I'm pretty sure the ignition is the same. Any Viper with 1 1/4" track will pull alot harder off the line when on snow....You may lose some top end but if you trail ride the sled how often are you running top speed?

I also heard the 2002 vipers are the fastes

Early 02's were usually the fastest stock. They all can be made faster. I have suspected that minor changes were made to the ignition map, or the tolerances were just closer. I really don't have any hard evidence, just a feeling.

You must admit if that is the best it can do it is an under achiever. I had an 02 and a friend of mine had an 03, same state of tune and he always had a slight edge which could be attributed to traction but then I clutched mine and put reeds in it and the rest is history. I guess the set-up I do for this viper s is to lose that track and clutch it. Anyone play with the gearing at all?
Viper Tom trail riding is good but when you come to the lake and there are many where I ride, that is where the chest beating takes place in the circles I run!

Some are always going to be faster than others, dead stock to dead stock. Even if they came off the line one right after the other. The reason: TOLERANCES. Parts can be exactly what they should be, or they could all be off to almost the rejection value and then guess what? That sled is slower (or maybe even faster, depending on which part it is and which way the tolerance goes). Testing and tuning is the best way to be sure you beat all the other tomatoes in your patch.

Either way - I'll never run a track shorter than 1 1/4 again. The gain on the trail is worth more to me than the little bit you lose on the lake.jminor1 said:You must admit if that is the best it can do it is an under achiever. My dad's 02 viper ER and my 04 S are now both completely stock except for we both have ripsaws, the 53/43 helix and green springs, he weighs in 50 lbs less and my o4 will take his up top by a couple sled lengths.
Like the man says - tolerances.
