Straight Exhaust.


Hey guys, sorry I havn't been on in a while, going through a rough time in life here at the moment. That's my pipes AJ posted pics of, yeah it's loud, but this is my drag sled, it will only be started at the race track. I havn't done much testing and tuning with the pipes yet, will have to wait for snow. I posted a couple sound clips/videos a while back, do a search and you'll probably find them. I will try to get a video at the first races.

AJ I highly recommend you do not run something this loud on the trail, or in town (up here we ride our sleds through town to get from place to place, no trailering). We have it pretty good but I can see pipes this loud ruining it for us all, soon there will be a strict ban of snowmobiles in town and a "no aftermarket silencer law" like everywhere else. Just use them with respect, that's all I ask.

Someone mentioned the Bender pipe bogging issue, yes this solves this problem, the sled performed excellent in deep snow, then I parked it in the garage and transformed it into a drag sled, it's still an ongoing project but here she is:

i was just asking the effects of it in the long run.... i want to do it because i love the sound of it.... if not i can just take 5 minutes out of my busy life and put the bender stingers back on. simple.
 
on long runs, other than drag racing, I can see it having bad side effects. pipe wont run propery because the drastic change with the bend and difference in back pressure. pipes are tuned pretty well to run as designed. I would be nervous running that on a long uphill pull, or anything more than 1/4 mile drag :( good luck I suppose, hopefully we have enough snow so if it blows you have time and money to repair and not miss the season :(
 
The packing in any silencer or can helps as much with getting heat in the pipe. With this set up i can see the pipes running cool. I can see alot of pistons with the exhaust edge burnt off them, and ruined jugs too. The reason alot of cans never worked on PV motors was because they changed the whole way the motor needed to run with proper back preasure. If you have someone who has tuned them, it would be a definate help, BUT running them on flat racing may react different then working them in deep snow. Me, I'd leave the stock stingers on and enjoy ridding. Maxdlx
 
when you run straight stingers what happens is you decrease the pipes ability to retain heat as someone mentioned earlier, and what this does is causes the engine to actually run richer, because the sonic wave being returned to the cylinder is less due to the less back pressure now of the straight stinger pipe, the pipe needs to operate at a certain temp to stay in the powerband of the engine was designed to run at. A cold pipe will build more torq sometimes but not more hp, and usually lower then desired operating rpm, which means less power. if your engine was designed to run at say 8500rpm, how good does it run at 7500 rpm wide open??, alot slower!!!

The piston recieves a "x"' amount of combustion heat returned back from the sonic waves from the pipe, the weaker the signal returned the less heat in pipe, and in your piston crown, you will find your pistons will have no carbon on them at all and will be very rich, because its running too cool of a temp now.
The next time you have a engine apart take a look at something, look at the under side of the piston crown, the area above the wrist pin, see that lil round spot that looks like brown choclate? choclate is correctly tuned. Or is it black sooty? sooty is overly rich!!! or is it grey ashey looking? that all tells you a engines state of tune. If you do nothing else but run straight stingers without tuning them and getting the correct back pressure for the engine( (((this goes by the diameter of the stinger pipe with straight pipes))) to run correctly with there will be no mark, as the piston wont be hot enuff to burn anything. Too small of a stinger diameter and long wide open runs will show you the grey ash or better known as "death ash" this is from too much back pressure, too much heat being retained in the piston/head pipe area. You want the choclate bar brown setting.

I know you see drag sleds with straight stingers and think they are cool, but theres a certain diameter that has to be matched with engine size,rpm, distance run,all kinds of things. If you just put them on to be cool without having the knowledge and time to tune them in, your honestly going to be slower then before, but it will be loud!! :2strokes:
 
Just put a Harley Davidson sticker on it! The Scooter Trash gets away with obnoxious exhausts all summer long, but NOOOOO not on a snowmobile. wtf
