ive been thinkin lately about buying some 1 1/4" aluminum stock and making some lightweight rear suspension arms. also gonna make new mounts for the shocks to accept cheap, light shocks as to keep everything light since the susp. will be just for drag racing.
what is everyones thoughts on the idea?

aluminum info

If you are only going to be drag racing with the aluminum parts then you can use almost any grade. But, if you are going to be getting on/off trail try to avoid the 7075 grade. It is strong but more prone to stress cracking. Use:

6061 T-6XX
2024 T4X
2025 T6

These grades are your best bet for tensile strength and their ability to flex instead of plasitcally deforming or stress cracking. 2024 T4 actually has the highest yield strength at 42 ksi followed by 6061 at 40 ksi and then 2025 at 37 ksi. You'll find that 6061 will machine a little easier than the other though.

All this info is in "Machinery's Handbook" ISBN#0-8311-2492-X. It is the desk referance that all engineers use to replace all the textbooks from school. It is fairly easy to read and has detailed info from mathmatics to mechanics, material selection to machine design, electronics, machining operations, tool making, chemistry, plastics, fasteners and fastern selection, GD&T dimensional analysis, etc.
I use it almost everyday at work and in my shop at home.

isn't it required to purchase a machinery's for engineering? i'm at purdue in mechanical engineering and they told us to treat it like the army treats their m-16's. eat with it, sleep with it, read it, get to know it inside and out. it pretty much like a bible, haha!
