Does anyone know if the idle mixture needle can be adjusted on an 04 Venture XL 500 (485cc) engine or is the carb sealed from the factory? Also, can the jets be changed? The engine loads up really quickly on start-up (half choke and then off as soon as possible but keeping revs up) and if I every try full choke, I'm done for a couple of hours because of flooding. Thanks.
04 Venture 500?? Is that a Canadian only sled by chance?Venture500xl said:Does anyone know if the idle mixture needle can be adjusted on an 04 Venture XL 500 (485cc) engine or is the carb sealed from the factory? Honestly it sounds more of a choke issue by your description, make sure the choke plungers are moving freely. You will want to shut the choke down as quick as possible anyway but yours sounds extra fussy.
As far as the jetting on the 485 goes, it should still have flat slide carbs (I believe) with the fuel screw (controls idle and just off idle mixture) located on the underside of the carbs, directly in front or behind the float bowl depending on how you are looking at it. If it indeed has flatslides the Yamaha carbs do not have an "air screw" like many others, they use a fuel screw as mentioned above. On your belt gaurd it should say "fuel mixture setting" or something of the sort, and should list "turns out". This adjustment is from a LIGHTLY seated screw being turned out to the desired setting, you can certainly play with this setting somewhat but typically they are pretty close to where it needs to be in a stock machine.
If you choose to adjust them I would not go much more than 1/4 turn increment's at a time from the factory settings, with "in" being leaner and "out being richer", the exact opposite of a typical air mixture screw.
Hope that made sence since I was rambling. Check your manual it should actually list this procedure.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I think the 500XL is only made in Canada. I'll check around the carbs for the right screws...the manual said nothing about this adjustment.

I have a 2000 XL and had to change the main and pilot jets bacause it ran so rich. It's a lot better on gas and runs better now. I still only put the choke on to start it and then turn it off right away or it will start to flood.

Thanks, I'll need to look into the jetting as well. It sure took some getting used to to start this machine and not give it too much choke.
