Decent gas milage (16 mpg), decent power (70-75 mph top speed) and very reliable.
Its a good sled as long as you dont want something that will do 100+ mph on the lake.

We had a 00 Phazer and the stock skis are pretty much junk. I dont remember how it faired on gas, but it wasent bad. Ours ran 82 mph gps with a 210 lb guy on it had 96 studs in stock track. I loved the white color, I believe OnlyBlue has it now....
The 2000 Phazer in stock form would run in the low 80's, and get 12 mpg. It does run fairly rich out of the box as most fan cooled sleds do, so there is some power left on the table as well as some gas mileage. Allen Ulmer (SRXSPEC) and others were able to get some more power out of it beyond that. The sled is light and handles very well especially with fairly agressive skis and a slightly more agressive track. I used SLP SLT's and a stock Viper track.
While it is not as nimble and quick as previous versions, it has long legs for a 500 fan and it rides great. It is the one sled that actually rides well with the Pro-Action under it. I have ridden on several TY rides with it, and while the big boys leave me on the straights, I catch them in the corners. It is amazing how well a sled without coolant running throughout the chassis can corner.

I have one in my sled as well. Fuel mileage is comparable to the ones above, but gets much worse if you haul on it. I got 82mph on my stock machine on the GPS, and thats at 19 000 original kms, havent had one problem with anything yet, this is one tough machine, lots of full throttle miles and lots of jumping. I can take anyone off the line and a ways down the lake with this machine, especially with the track and studs on it now!, and I raced an indy 500 repeatedly, and took him every single time, even when letting him have a head start to top speed, then catching up on him.
Handling is super, especially with the steel skis gone, oh, and did I mention this thing is preety much 100% maintenace free, besides sliders and the usual stuff, haha. You can catch anyone on the trails with this sled, but the lakes will be a different tune, but your never really that far off.

Steel skis with plastic skins were never that great. Plastic skis would be the first thing Id invest in if I had a Phazer 500.TopGunnSrx said:We had a 00 Phazer and the stock skis are pretty much junk. The 2001 Phazer came stock with plastic skis. My wife has one and loves it. It is a pig on gas though. Only about 10-11 mpg.

Yes – I forget the ski deal – we have USI’s on – the stock ones are pretty poor.
It was mentioned they arrive rich – yes – as that’s what makes the most HP on that model. It has to do with the carb design and stock pipe. Dynotech, the honest people, did some tests on the early Phazer as well and top end is fat. They did lean it down to what it should be and it went slower, over a longer run.
So – in its stock pipe and carb form, it runs rich – so be it. It hauls in deep snow forever.
I think (or was that on the SX500R) it really liked a smaller low speed air correction jet as well.

was there a horsepower difference between the phazer 2 and the phazer 500?

Yes, there was a difference, all thanks to the updates such as new crankase design, and a few other things, as mentioned above. The phazer II was commonly making 58hp, and the phazer 500 around 63-65.
BTW, I should mention that the polaris 550fan only makes 60hp, and the tend to round up, ha!. Also, the cat 565cc (570) makes a claimed 62.5hp, LOL. So feel good about this hp, its the most powerful fan.
You can find alot of info about hp, rpms. clutching, jetting etc..., in here, jsut by doing some searches. Im going to try and find my dynotech research links and threads, lots of good stuff in there!
