who needs the weight

does anyone know what it would take to get a stock electric start equiped sled to run without the battery. How would I take the whole electric start system out? What is the difference between the sleds with elcetric start and without? I don't understand why the seld needs the battery to run when other models don't.. Thanks for any help!
 
sleds without batteries have smoothing capacitors installed. I don't know what would happen if you didn't install them when you remove the battery.(maybe damage the cdi?)
 
you could put in a smaller battery.

I personaly think the shave every oz from a sled train of thought is often misdirected. When I pulled the engine on my old ZR580 I found about 15lbs of oil soaked pine cones under there. Lets not forget the sled can gain 100 lbs every time you fill it up. I honestly don't think your going to actualy feal the weight differnce if you pull the electric start system.
 
I know mine won't start with a completly dead battery. May just be that I am too much of a wimp to pull start it....
 
My brother inlaws '02 VM6 won't start with a low batt.

and my wifes '01 VM5 the tach and fuel gauge don't work with
out the batt.
 
Thanks for all the responses!! I don't think I'd gain to much in the weigh reducing department either but I had to ask! The thing that got me going on this was the fact that this is the only sled I've ever owned with elec start and maintaining the battery and buying a new one almost every year is a pain. To me a sled that starts first pull doesn't need elec start. Plus all my doo riding buddies like to bust on me for it, lol! I called yamaha direct and even they could not tell me what the difference is between the sleds with elec start and without. I will check into all your thoughts guys and post the outcome, thanks again!

Daman it's wierd that your wifes sled is the stock form of mine and it does that. I can pull start it (first pull) and mine starts right up. once with dead battery hooked up and once without the battery at all. I only let it idle and warm up though. never tried driving it like that. I do notice that none of my gauge warning lights blinked at start up but all lights, tach speedo etc seem to work flawlessly..

it'll start up just fine,but the tach and fuel gauge don't work without the batt.
 
A battery tender would be good investment if you are buying a new battery every year. I keep one on my quad battery and got 8 years on it before it went. I also bring my battery home for the winter and set it on a board in the basement on the battery tender. I also pull my jet ski batteries in the winter and alternate which ones I charge, they are 5 years old.
 
i take my batts out and bring them in the house, basment(warm),then i trickel charge them every few months through out the summer.
 
Actually..a few good points have been brought up...Yeah..my Viper gauge goes wonky without a battery...curious if there are smaller batteries to keep the weight down and
make more room for a possible new exhaust...
As for maintaining your battery...I opted for the Battery tender aswell..but then my dad picked me up one of those solar panels for charging instead...I did some tweeking to the wires and it now hooks into my visor cable...just turned it over on Saturday... sweeet!!!..and when I pull the sled out to play...the solar panel goes onto my ATV...
 
sheep i did not realize your sled was that new the chargeing circit might be differant to read volts in the battery.The old phasers had no probs without a batt but i seam to remember a warning in the manual.Is a bike battery smaller.
 
Well I called yamaha direct last night they don't know why but said not to run the sled without a battery at least hooked up, even if completely dead. The yami dealer called me back this afternoon and said all the techs have had sleds come in with electric start and no battery that have been run and for some reason the sleds blow all the lights and then close after the cdi boxes. They said as long as the battery is hooked up, even if dead, the sleds were fine. Niether of them knew what the difference in the pull start sleds vs the elec start sleds were... Kinda weird but needless to say I picked up a new battery from napa today and also bought a trickle charger from them. Hopefully I get it right this time!!
Oh yeah I asked yamaha about the vipers and why the tachs and other things were getting messed up and they couldn't figure out how the battery being out or dead effects that at all. Must be some voodoo yami building in the electrical systems of our sleds, lol!!! Oh well Long live yamaha anyhow!! ;)!
 
maybe its the way the electrical circuits are grounded with the electric start?Could just be a grounding issue such as a voltage regulator issue.
 
That was my thought too. I just think it's wierd that niether Yamaha nor the dealers have any idea what the difference in the two sleds is. I mean it's almost 2007 and my sled at least is a 2001. You would think someone would have converted or something by now.. I definitely won't want electric start on my next sled though.
 
My biggest concern this year though is getting snow. The last few winters here have gotten worse and worse. I could have driven a motorcycle almost daily here last winter. I'm only given it one more year!! :whine:
