1st would like help finding FAQ "Locked" area??? so I can do some searching for my answers.
2nd I wnat to go through, new to me 1996 Vmax XT 600
Carbs
Clutch Clean and or Rebuild adjust???
Skid Rolllers & Adjustment, just replace all? kits sold for this? etc...
Hyfax replacement and whatever you guys suggest??
I used to race moto/Supercross and always pulled my own maintenance on my bikes and want to do this on my sled.
I have ordered CD of Service Manual
I just need to have you guys point me in the right direction for how I should prioritize and what I should do to help prepare for the coming season.
I have read the posts on Carb cleaning etc... for this model year to help get ok mileage.
I do want to do some mild mods to get the most out of this sled until I can get something newer and more performance oreintated.
I am certain that I will be pounding the piss out of this old girl much like my mx bikes so need to get her into "pound the whoops" mode.
ANY HELP OR DIRECTION TO GET ME MOVING ON THE BASICS WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

1st off....welcome to TY
2nd...lets get some more info from you. How many miles on your sled? How well has it been maintained by the previous owner? Any modifications?
I usually clean my carbs every fall just to make sure there are no plugged jets. I also pull my clutches and clean them real well with hot soapy water and lightly scuff the pully surfaces with a scotch brite pad. Your primary spring should be replaced...if it hasn't been changed lately. Put a new belt on it and adjust it so it sets about 1/8" over the secondary sheaves. On your rear suspension you can check the wheel bearings to make sure they rotate freely with the suspension still in the sled....If you want to know more you would have to remove the suspension to check the bushings. Make sure you grease the suspension often. Replace your chain case oil at least once a year.
Hope that helps.....enjoy flooging the crap out of your new ride.

Thank you for responding.
Sled has 2500 miles on it
Bone Stock as far as I can tell
Seems to have been reasonalbly taken care of, everything works.
Rear Shock Rebuilt Last Year
Smokes (Rich) bad - Carbs, Airbox, etc...Old gas
Track has three studs ripped through (outer edge), otherwise ok. It does seem to have studs where it rides on the track wheels, is this ok???
Some of the wheels have chunks of rubber out of them - is this as it seems pointing towards replacing them?
Do they sell a kit just to replaced them all?
How about cylinder head mod? Is taking one of the layers out as safe as everyone makes it sound?
Is it a must to then always run premium gas?
Whats the HP gain?
How about boysen reeds? (Used them on my MX bikes) I couldnt find HP gains on the Boysen site but MX bikes (HONDA) seem to respond well throughout the powerband.
Suspension Mods?
Dont want to go to the extreme (M-10)

I am reading back through all the old posts to glean as much as I can from them, but appreciate any links or good articles from anyone to spiff up my Vmax, It seems to have been one of the most popular best selling sleds for Yamaha so I hope there is some good info out there.
Thanks again for help Viper T, and am looking forward to tearing into my new toy. Its cool to be excited about pulling maintenance and hopping up a new toy, I was pretty burned out on the MX bikes.

You seem to have upgraded to XT stuff, did I get lucky buying the XT? Is it an upgrade model?
Do you have any suggestions or links to getting my sled up to the best it can be with relatively inexpensive mods?
Thanks again for responding and appreciate any advice.

Dont bother with reeds they do nothing for the Yamy snowmachines.
Look at thin head gasket, reed spacers or notch, clutching and ride it.
These mods will give you much better throttle response and done right better gas mileage.

Here is a link to get the most out yoursled. www.totallyamaha.net There are alot of guys that can help with clutching and everything else. I like the XT's. As far as mods I did, all the advice came from here. You can buy OEM parts from Port Yamaha. They offer 16% percent on OEM parts right now. There are also a few other site supporters I use. If you want skis I believe Rich Motorsports has some good deals.

Hey AirBlue..I'm also very new to this, just picked up a 97 Vmax XT, and one of the things I noticed, as well as my buddy who picked up a really clean 94 Vmax was that the Exhaust Gasket needed to be replaced on Both sleds. I ordered that, and will be putting it on in a week or so, but might want to check yours. Other than that, I guess plugs as well, and belt. The belt on mine was brand new, and I have a new spare too. Bought new plugs, will keep the ones in there as spares, since I don't think they are bad, but Wanted to start out with fresh plugs.

I checked all tolerances/clearances from the service manual...such things as idle speed, carb syncronization, length of play at throttle, lenghth of oil cable..etc. I also replaced all the bushings in the rear and greased everything real good. Carb cleaning as mentioned. New exhaust gaskets. Also a nice wash/wax makes you feel great about your new toy. Just these tune up items made it run fantastic, and ride much better that the first year I had it, since i just rode it that winter.
