I have a chance to buy a 2001 Yamaha SXR 500, and I would like to get some insight on this sled. Top speed, Hp, Know problems Etc. Anything would be a help, as I know nothing about these sleds. Are they in the same body as the 01 Phazer? What are these 500 Liquid Cooled engines like? Thanks in advance.

Good place to start and Welcome to TY.
I don't have any experiance with the SXR500 but do with the 99 VMax500 (basically the same machine). It is a decent sled provided it is in good condition they are good preformers. While not a rocket it should do well on any trails. Top speed is not this sled's forte but 90MPH is not out of the question. The 500 (494cc twin) makes about 90HP on a good day. This is the kind of sled you can trail ride all day. Just gas it and add oil every once in a while and it will be happy.
Things to look for before a sale are about the same any other sled. A preseason sale without snow makes it a bit hard to see how it rides and with warmer weather it is hard to tell how it runs. Hopefully the owner is honest with you on those fronts.
What is the offer? Where are you planing to ride it? How do you ride? Do you ride with others? Do they ride Yamaha's as well? Sometimes it helps having a Yamaha in a group so you can tow out the... I digress.
Personaly I'd start the bid at $2200 USD for a 01 SXR500 with less than 4000 miles. knock a hundred off for every thousand miles over 4000. I saw an '00 SXR500 on craigs list for $3K. I know it might seem low but it is a buyers market.

SXR 500s are a pretty nimble sled on the trail - I rode one for about ten miles. Fun little ride. If I was looking to get into a snowmobile I would think it's a good place to start!

Thanks all, great forum you have here. I am from the West Coast Of Newfoundland, Canada. Ive been sledding for years, (90 Arcitc Cat Prowler 440 L/C.) Which I have recently sold. I dont do A Lot of jumping, But I would like something with decent suspension, and good handleing. I did want something that would at least pull away from my old cat (1000 ft), and if you guys are saying 90Mph tops, Thats not a long ways ahead of my old cat. The price is 2200 CND. Its in great shape and has around 3000Km on it. Would this sled run with say, the MXZ 500, and ZR 500? Thanks again guys.

Thanks man. Anyone know if she'll run with the other 500s?

Very good buy for that price, provided the sled is in good shape.
It will likely be a little slower than the other 2, but you should be able to get close with some work.

Yah if you were to line up and race them, sry but you would be last.
The Rev is really a 600 with a 500 label so nothing to be ashamed of there, and the zr500 is very quick. not saying that sled is slow... also if that engine is putting out 90 hp, you might be seeing a little more then 90 mph, my z570 with 70 hp did that!

The 500 isent in the rev chassis. Its a 99. Sorry I should of been more specific. Just another machine I was looking at. My old cat had 68Hp, and she would do 85-90mph. Thanks all. Great site.
ok ill chime in now as i own that sled.
if it is all stock all you will get is 80mph out of it. it will be snappy from corner to corner in the trails but to get the 90mph out of a 2000-2001 sxr500 you have to change the upper gear to a 22 tooth with a 70l chain as it is currently a 21 tooth with a 68l chain. buddys wife has a mxz583 1996 and when we go at it on the lake we are dead even to 80mph then she pulls away from me as i have not modded the gears yet.
handleing is awsome on this sled in stock or (like mine) with upgraded skis track and clutching. i take my brothers 2002 viper on take off but get my *** kicked once the viper gets wound up.
never jumped it much but being the mainiac i am i have never bottomed the suspension while riding and the ride is very comfortable.
bottom line is its not a ball of fire but it is a really good sled. mine is up for sale though and i am asking $4000.00 (can) for it. all the stock parts are going with it (the ones i have left). 3500km on it with cbperf front end kit (wicked stuff), mbrp trail can, viper traction brkts, viper skis, 1.25" ripsaw track, srx rear cooler, engine torque limiter, ice scratchers, and clutched as per vmaxjhons 500 set up in the tec pages. just to give you an idea what the one you are looking at is worth and some of the best bang for buck mods that can be done to it.
any more questions just ask and i will answer if i know.
