Will Xtra-10 Fit 96 Vmax Xt - WHAT DO I REALLY WANT?

1995 Polaris Snowmobile Xtra-10 Suspension OUT OF A 1995 XCR 440 Special, will it fit 96 Vmax XT?

Yes it will. You will need to take some measurements of the mounting locations from donor chassis and apply to your chassis. You will need to measure tunnel widths and use spacers where necceassary. It really isn't very hard to do. Did you already purchase the skid? You may want to buy a Polaris Edge skid. It uses the fox PPS shocks. You can use the PPS shocks on extra 10 skids from 98-99 MCB performance has a kit for $200 with new Fox PPS shock.

Thanks for the quick response guys, found one but it wasnt the "edge" version so I will keep looking.

Have either of you ridden 96 XT or older with skid mod and stock pogo front? Does it balance ok or should I just save the $ for next summer and find myself a true trail/ditch/jumpable performance sled. I want something more like a YZ450 than a GS1000. Lake speed top end not a big deal to me, ;)! YET.

You can always do the Phazer 2 pack deal. They feel just like a quad and seem very agile. $148 a month for 2 sleds, 2 helmets 2 jackets and a 2 place trailer.

Leave the proaction suspention in the XT. It is not a ditchbanger, and no rear suspension will ever make it a ditchbanger. My advise if you want to rough it up, get a nitro or the Phazer FX

Like ski said, this sled is not a dichtbanger. Decent sled but no ditch banger. Get the rear shocks rebuilt/revalved and let it ride and save your money for something else.

Ski/Dnale
I am going to take your advice, rear shock already done Dnale.

I spent 3 hours this morning going through all the old Vmax posts - your sure right - no MX sled here. But heck for $850 - 2200 miles - and in pretty good shape, hopefully my riding skill will let me have fun with her and have for a backup and icefishing sled next year.

ANY SUGGESTIONS regarding a future investment in a USED YAMAHA that is a GOOD DITCHBANGER/TWISTY TRAIL/JUMPABLE. With snow levels & Conditions the last couple of years I am not going to lay out huge dollars for a new model so I will be looking for a deal on something $3000 or under next summer.

Dont need two sleds or the trailer :dunno: or the finance charges.
See my response above Sandman.

Not much I can add on the "leave the Proaction in the XT" besides the Xtra-10 you were looking at is the same one my brother has in his 96 XCR (I think that is the Polaris he has) anyway that is a speed type skid. It is a low type skid that is not setup for what you want to do with your XT anyway.

Of course your limitation is the front end of the 96xt. For the $850 you have in it just enjoy it as is and beat the hell out of it.

I really enjoy my old 94 VMAX 600. It is alot fun off-trail and the pogos are not all that bad. These sleds are reliable. You can keep skid the way it is or install better shocks. I would not attempt any major jumps like you see in the slednecks video. For the money you will not get hurt. Use it for a year or so and upgrade later. It will always make a great back-up sled because they are really reliable.

I used to own an '88 Exciter. Pretty much the same setup upfront at least. Certainly not the best but it took want ever I could dish out physically. You might benefit from a set of plastic ski's.

As far as the jumps go I think you need to keep in mind those pro's don't care about their equipment.

Heck I wont be Fuzz Butt I will probably be SORE BUTT ;)! .

I am definitely going to get the forums opinion on a good YAMAHA ditch banger for next year.

Appreciate the response Fuzz!

Now that I started pulling maint. on the sled and put it up on the stand - I think I would have to put a rocket on the back end to get any huge air, this 96 XT is HEAVY! If I get carried away you guys will probably feel the "THUD" of my landing up where your at.

I have no problems in the tight and twisties at all but I also have been riding for 21 years.

Nothing against the 600XT (I owned the one below from new until last fall 2005) but, they are Heavy and more of a sit back and trail ride sled and not a rider forward aggressive let's go find the tight and twisty sled !

That is one sweet looking sled for its age ;)!
I got dibbs on the sled you have now when your ready for a new one.

The wonderful thing is I paid $1000 for my sled and did not have to finance it for 5 or 6 years. It takes me every where a brand new $8000 or $10,000. I am paying less on insurance. It's puts the same smile on my face as riding my friends new sleds. It starts just as easy as new. It handles off-trail as good as my friends new sleds. It will catch some air. Nothing like in a slednecks video. Would a new sled handle better yeah it would but I can have a whole lot of fun with a extra 7 or 8,000 in my wallet. I will eventually buy a new sled but will still keep my old iron. Those old pogos work just fine for me as they do for alot of other people. My old Vmax 600 is still lighter than the new 4 strokes. It isn't a lake racer or drag sled but that isn't my thing. I will sit back and let the market decide my next sled. There is too many changes going on.
