Ive been noticing that people have been putting viper long travel shocks on there v-max's. my question, are the viper shocks different from the xtc shocks that are already long travel?

Yes. The Viper has a "Sporty" valving where as the XTC is a "Plushy" valving and the rear spring has a different rate.
the ride in the rear is similar to an xtc shock setup, the fronts are similar but sit lower with a multirate spring that alows more sag.
if you end up with xtc shocks, they do ride good, but, they dont hook up very good, you will want to install a 2.3 or 2.5 spring on the front track shock. it makes the sled handle and hook up alot better. also, run the front springs with no preload.
