I have a question regarding the speedometer on my 2000 VMAX 700> I have verified the speedometer, the speedometer cable, and the transfer box to the speedometer cable are functioning properly. It seems the plastic joint that runs from the transfer box to the front axle spins freely inside the axle. I believe there is a small connector that screws into the axle that sticks through the bearings. It seems this connector has had the internal workings stripped by the joint between it and the transfer case. I'm not sure how to replace this connector. Do I need to remove the bearings, etc. to get to it., or can I simple stick a screwdriver through the bearings and remove the connector? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

the peice in the end of the drive axle is pressed in, its steel. there is a drive key thats square drive that goes from the transmission box into the driveaxle end, are you saying the key spins inside of the driveaxle?

replace insert or J.B. Weld it

Sounds like the steel insert that was pressed into the end of your drive shaft (which drives the transfer box through the use of a square key) is worn out. Mine did the same thing. There are two ways to fix it. Take the drive shaft out, remove the old insert and have a new insert pressed in - or - get a new square key and J.B. Weld it into the worn out insert. The J.B. weld fix is what I did and it has held up through two years of marginal mileage. However, the drive shaft has to come out this fall for installation of a new track so the insert is going to get replaced.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will first make sure that a piece of the square shaft is not stuck in the steel insert. If there isn't a piece of the shaft broken off in the steel insert, then I will try the JB Weld approach. Anything is better than dropping the drive shaft.
