Pull starting it.

We have 2 97 SX's. blah blah blah... you all know. Well when we go to start them the one will more miles pulls way way way harder then the other one. When they warm up it pulls just like the other one. Any ideas on what would cause it to pull harder?
 
are they both stock motors? what miles are on them? did u buy them used or new? need to know this to find out. could be one had the gasket mod done one doesnt one could have had the rings replaced before u bought it and one didnt one could have a score in the cylinders and one doesnt. or it could be as simple as a loose spark plug letting out compression.
 
Do a compression test and possibly a leak down test. There my be a difference between the 2 motors at the "Air Pumping" ability.

However after reading your posts over the past few days you may just simply have a carb way out of tune, i.e. cloged jets or passages, or a fuel feed issue that the excessive pulling overcomes.

My XTC is an electric start thank God. If it were a pull start I would have your same complaint. My motor really likes to crank when it's cold (not been run in a few hours or more). Everything I have looked at checks out. As long as the battery holds out I'm fine with it.
 
I second the motion to do a compression (wet and dry) and a leakdown test. The leakdown is very important.

Also look inside the cylinders as much as you can through all holes (spark, intake, and exhaust). I would be inclined to take the top end apart and check it out. If I didn't find anything I would tear her down. It sounds like you may have an internal issue that might be way cheaper to fix now, then after she blows.

They are both stock motors as far as I know. The one I'm talking about has 5950 miles and the other one has 3000 miles on it. They were both bought used will approximately 3000 miles and 1900 miles.
 
one might be like my et410 is. if it sits for long periods (over 2weeks) without running it seems the fuel pump looses its prime. i do not have estart on this sled so when it does this it takes 12-15 pulls to get it running. if it is run once a week only takes 5-6 when it is cold. just someting else to consider.
 
Pretty sure it's not the fuel pump. It can sit all summer and it only takes about 2-5 pulls and it will go.
 
do you mean its physically harder to pull over, or do you just mean it takes a lot more pulls to start it?

It is physically harder to pull over. Then when it is warm it pulls just fine.
 
Oil

My 700 is like that, pulls really hard cold but easy hot. I changed over to non synthetic oil and it is way easier to pull over cold. Are both sleds are using the same oil?
 
My 97 SX700 even sitting in a heated building is "hard" to pull the recoil also then after it starts of a few pulls it is much easier No big deal is it?
 
It could be something as simple as one having a looser fiting belt or one of a different rubber compound. If one is tight enough to be draging it will be tougher to pull over . I've had to open up the secondary a little on real cold mornings to help get mine started.
