I have the opportunity to buy a cold air kit, modified air box (to work with the cold air kit) and a hot air exhaust kit. Can I just put this on my Phazer without any other modifications? Would I have to touch the jetting? I have no idea how to do that, so I just want a simple bolt on type deal.
Let me know what you all think.

was that the one from ebay, the guy in newmarket selling the fully built Bender phazer motor and parts????

that's what I was thinking . . . I was looking at that post too; emailed hima nd got pics-I think he wants little too much for it though.

yes it is!
He's trying to part it out I guess.
So you guys think it's too much? How exactly does it work? Is it just a bolt on and that's it?

I would have to say that there is no such thing as a bolt on cold air kit for the Phazer. You would have to rejet for sure, cold air is more dense and needs more fuel.

in general if something doesn't require rejetting, it means the air is flowing the same as before so it won't make more power.

rejetting isn't hard if you know what parts to install. If your trying to figure it out yourself, you better know what your doing.

The cold air kit sold by Bender several years ago was no more than a cover that mounted over the louvers and faced to the rear. It keep snow from covering the louvers and still allowed air in. Worked great for what it was designed to do..........but don't know if I would of called it a cold air kit.

Yes it is an actual cold air kit.I had one and it does take cold air from the outside. You must and I stress you must rejet in cold weather as I learned the hard way.I believe the kit called for one size bigger in both mains and pilots. It worked good for me.

Had them on a '89 Phazer and two '89 Exciters and never re-jetted or had any problems. Riding at 6000'-12000' in sometimes below 0 weather.

the kit had several parts,
the top cover, kept snow from going thru the louvers
the bottom attached to the louvers and directed air into a duct
that went into the air box
some came with a different air box top ( Exciters ? )

The kit does not allow for total cold, outside air. There is still an opening underneath the louvers that allows underhood air in. I checked with whoever I got my kit from (Bender or Reichard, I don't remember), and found that it is the way it was designed. I think it may be to prevent carb icing. I blocked the opening with silicone and never had any problem. If that is done, the jetting may have to be richer than the recommended cold air package jetting.

One drawback is that it makes more noise. The intake duct (or cover) directs the intake noise back toward the operator. I lined underneath the roof of the duct with a sheet of foam to lessen it.

when I did my Phazer and later Exciter it sucked only outside air, and also had a foam insert to go in to keep snow out of the backwards air scoop

As far as I know, the kits were all the same no matter who they were purchased from. It would not be easily noticed, but when I installed the kit on my Phazer, I had the gas tank cover/louver assembly (called the instrument panel by Yamaha) off of the sled and the piece that fits under the louvers has a gap at the rear between it and the panel. It does not fit tightly and seal to the panel. When I contacted the seller, they acknowledged that the gap was there.
I seems I remember a snow filter being with my kit, but I never used it. I did not think I needed it and did not want anything to cut down the airflow. Carbs can ice up even with a snow filter. That was ostensibly the reason for the admittance of some warm underhood air. Some of the newer sleds have heated carbs for that reason.

Snakebit- could you post a large picture of your avatar? I dont have the know-how to enlarge it.
Great photo.
It appears there may have been some alcohol involved.

I've used Bender kits on Exciters and Phazers the pictures show a kit for my 1990 Exciter. The Phazer kits used a 3" PVC (?) pipe that directed air directly from the deflector into the air box and was a tight fit. Using only cold air vs. warm under hood air I believe you need to jet richer.

No will not fit a Phazer see the picture's above #2 & 3 I have in my hand on a Phazer the bottom section has a round pipe that fits in between that and in place of the 90 degree stock snorkle and into the airbox. Could you cut and add a 3"(?) piece of PVC pipe and make it work..... maybe ?
