Phazer and phazer II what is the differance...

I went out and looked at my 91 long track, different rails but same bolts on the extensions. That track was their Mountain Master supposed to be real good in the soft snow, I put one on mine and it is. I think the track was 1 1/8, maybe 1 1/4. For $ 500 you have a good sled.

Get a skid plate for the belly pan.
 
What the Hey...... is covering the fan output in the engine picture #4 ? ! ? How will this thing cool with the output blocked ? I've had cool air kits that bolt to the belt cover and directs the air directly to the louver but this is a ?
 
Hey Vmax540,that thing looks okay. Looks just like mine, got the inlet scoop left side, air comes thru, the shroud guides it to the exit clutch side, towards the back. Looks right to me???

I think it might be the angle of the pic?? :dunno:

If you look in this picture where the Red arrows are, should there be idler wheels? It seems like there should be. It sounds like you have the same suspension would you mind checking for me so I know if I need to buy that shaft and idlers.

I hope this thread isnt getting annoyingly long I can start a new one since its veered off the original topic
 
There is a set on the inside of the rails where the spring support is, there is a second set to the outside of the rails back where the finder washers are. There is a shaft at this point that goes across from one rail to the other.

They probably rode the sled in a lot of powder and figured they didn't need any wheels.

Back to the original question; the differences between the early Phazer and the Phazer II.

There were quite a few differences between the "I" and II. I did not know about most of them until I got a newer one. Many of them are not readily noticeable.
Beside the longer track, wider ski stance (along with the different struts with the knee joint in front), hand and thumb warmers, and plastic belly pan previously mentioned, the handlebars were wider and the brake disc was larger. The II also had self adjusting brakes. The voltage regulator was different and mounted in a different place. The footrests had vent holes. The I had a stabilizer bar, the II did not. The skis were made heavier on later models (the early skis were quite flimsy), I think that change may have come with the II.
I think that the windshield was changed to the lower one before the Phazer II, but am not sure about that.
I know there were others but can't remember them right now.

It would be good to have a listing of all the changes. Does anyone know any others?

Skid Plates for Phazers, like a nice black one, (at least not purple, red, etc) are hard to find. I have managed to find two on eBay, new old stock, and win the auctions. Otherwise, try a sled junk yard or throw a WTB list on this site.
 
Ok, The first picture is the suspension from my 95 ST and the second is the fan output of any stock Phazer I've ever had and I've had quite a few.

PZ1 The seat and tunnel is longer on the II's and the magneto output(?) was increased and voltage regulator is different on the 1991 's on up (all the 1990 Phazer II's had lukewarm hand & Thumb warmers) !

Vmax540 - I think that what you are seeing at the shroud outlet is an illusion. When I first looked at it, I also thought it looked like something was blocking it.

I was just thinking of the longer seat and tunnel as being along with the longer track.
The rear compartment is larger and there is more slope to the back of the seat, but (unfortunately) the part of the seat that is sat on is not any longer on the II. I wish it was, the Phazer seats are just a little too short for my liking.

You jogged my memory on the magneto output. It was raised to 200 watts versus 150 on the earlier Phazer. Actually, along with the regulator much of the electrical system was changed. The flywheel and stator plate were different. I had thought it started on the first year of the II.
The handwarmers are supplied from a separate coil and do not draw from the lighting coil. The output of the handwarmer coil may have also been raised though.
I have the high output Yamaha warmers on my 1986 Phazer and they heat well.
 
I bought my wife's 1990 new in the fall of 89 (still have it :) ) and I asked my dealer what I could change to make the warmers get hot like my dads 91 and he said he looked it up and they were the same..... yet after looking I see there is a different regulator which if I remember correctly has more wires ? I suppose, I would have to change the wire harness, regulator and grip warmer coil and who knows what else ?

I looked at a Venture wiring diagram and found that there is an extra generating coil for the rear handwarmers. An extra coil could be added to the 1991 and up Phazer for more electrical output. I will have to check to see if it will fit the older Phazer stator plate, but I don't think there is any room for another one (I am always looking for more power). I checked the parts listing and the newer stator plate is only listed as a complete assembly.

If that coil would fit your 1990 it would give you more output for the warmers. If it is not available seperately, perhaps you could purchase a used one.

The Yamaha accessory high heat grips or aftermarket grips with higher wattage would help you also. I think the high output grips were the standard ones used on later models - 1994 and above.
 
Do you know if the wattage was higher on the Hot Grips? They may have been the same as the originals. I think Yamaha's grips are made by the Hot Grips company.
