I noticed last spring in my wife's '98 VMAX 500 that there was some metal "stuff" on the chain case dipstick. So, I took it apart today, and found some little chunks of metal in the chain case, and a little funny looking washer. There was also quite a buildup of metal shavings around the top bearing of the case cover. I've never had one of these apart before, but I don't see anything obvious broken?

I've attached some pics, if anyone has any thoughts on where I should go from here, I'd sure appreciate it!!!

Thanks,
Mike

I'd bet it is one of the bearings in behind the gears. Just a quess though. Maxdlx

The washer is off the end of your dipstick. The big chunk looks like your magnet off the end of the dipstick. Looks like all the "metal is actually broken grindings of your magnet attaching to steel parts along with sludge build up. do you have a pic of your dipstick end? If this is the first time you have it split open I'd definately check the bearings also.

Looks just like mine did when the magnet fell off the dipstick. Good luck cleaning all the magnet parts out of the bearings. I just replaced them. Polaris has bearings that are the same dimensions as the ones in the chaicase. They are about 1/4 the price of the Yamaha ones.

Well, you guys hit the nail on the head! The magnet is gone! Any advice (other than the Polaris bearings) on replacing them?

That's a pretty cheesy method for holding on that magnet!

Thanks for figuring this one out guys!! ;)!

Mike

Off the top I do not know the numbers on those bearings. But once you get them out, any bearing store should be able to help you at a fraction of the cost.

I would just bite the bullet and replace it all, or find some machine shop that dose mag partical testing and see if they can demagnitise it all. I could if you were near me.

Ok, I'm going to replace them (or have them replaced). How hard is it to get those bearings out? And put new ones back in? I got the snap ring out of the top bearing, but I haven't got it out of the bottom one yet! And it's supposed to snow today!

I couldn't agree more! Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this thread!!!! ;)!

Ok, I talked to a old Yamaha mechanic, and he said the two bearings on the side towards the engine are sealed, and as long as the seals are still good, they shouldn't need changing? He did recommend changing the one in the case cover though, so I'm going to do that.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Mike

Missing Magnet

Changed the chaincase oil on my 97 V-max yesterday and found the same thing..What a mess..It might be a good idea to remove these magnets before they fall off..It sounds like a common problem with these dipsticks...

Yeah, I got thinking about it yesterday when I was putting my wife's 500 back together, and was looking at mine from the 700, and I noticed that above the magnet, they've compressed the dip stick rod to put the level marks on it, but that also keeps the magnet from sliding up the stick. So, I decided to put the end of my dipstick in my vice and compress it flat to keep the magnet from falling off the end! So, now I have the washer, and my squished end to keep the magnet on!!!!

Only time will tell...

Make sure to check those bearings behind the gears. Some of the late 90's yamahas came with bearings sealed towards the chaincase, others had them sealed towards the tunnel, and i've seen a few with no seals at all on the lower bearing. Pull the gears off and make sure before you just assume that it was sealed and that none of the magnet material got in there. Cheap insurance.

Change the bearings while you are there. Don't risk it. They are 6205 bearings if I remember correctly. Take them out and your local Napa store can match them up. They are about 20.00 each for the good ones.

Don't Replace!!!!! Just Don't!!!

Man do not replace cause it's going to happened again...Just flush out everything good and let dry out. Then inspect witrh a mirror and light, look behind...If there was no leaks when thing were together, than there should not be any issues...Before you put the cover back on rub some dot3 brake fluid on the cover seal and then install...fill up with amsoil atf syn and your good to go...This has happened to twice...and since I have over 6000km without issues...Your asking about the dot3 it swells the seal cause the atf is a little thin but fill not afect anythings...Mike

Thanks for heads up! I did pull the gears and chain off, and the seals were on the chain case side, so I left them alone. Looked like a ton of work to replace those bearings!

actually it's not bad,,but it looks like your good to go..

with the cover off ,put the dip stick in and check and make shure
it's not close to hitting anything,if it is just bend it slightly.

i've never had any problems with any of my DS..
