i was going to take the top end off my 97 sx vmax 600 to do the head gasket mod and replace the base gasket and found that, there are no layers to be removed on the gasket i all have is one layer aluminum. im not sure how thick it is, but does this mean that the pervious owner already did the gasket mod? if this is the case i think i am susposed to be runnning premium and i have been running 87 and 89 for like 3 years now. what should i do as far as getting this sled to were it should be?

sounds like you have been lucky getting good regular fuel.This just goes to show how conserative yamaha has been on there squish.As the saying goes if it works don't mess with it.Now if you put on pipes you may have an issue.New 3 layer gaskets from yamaha will run you a 100 bucks.
