Hey guys, my viper has 5,700 miles on it..I can let it sit a week and go outside and it will start up second pull half choke...I was thinking about replacing the rings because of the mileage...anyone think this is a good idea??
 
ya, your definitely due, you will have blow by on your pistons and the longer you wait the better your chances are youll wear the skirts on the pistons and then will need to replace those as well. You will see the blow by on the sides of the piston as black film from second rings to below the wrist pin opening and also see black film on the bottom of your cylinders, as the blow by going past the rings contaminates the fresh fuel charge and is resucked up into the bottom of the transfer poerts!
There has been a thousand post on this and everyone thinks that just because its a yamaha it doesnt need ring maintenace, and its not the brand, but the fact its a 2 stroke engine, no matter what brand eats rings!! About every 3000 miles they need replaced in a engine regardless of the brand or the oil used, rings take a beating in a 2 stroke engine. Once the rings wear what happens is the piston loses its stability in the bore and begins to rock back and forth this causes the skirts to wear and piston becomes unstable, if let go for long enuff time the result will be broken skirts and majoe engine damage from shapnal flying around in the case. Not to mention your going to lose power from contaminating the fuel charge below in the case from excessive blow by.
 
Mr.Viper do you know what they charge at the dealer for piston rings? Also i'll need to take my seat off and bleed the coolant after the motor is back together right?
 
A set of rings for your viper will be around 50 bucks for all three cylinders, not bad at all and very worth it! Probably also want to replace your head gasket as well, although i'm sure some people will debate that. When you put it back together, make sure to look at the cylinder and head torque specs, and use a star or criss-cross pattern when tightening the head, breaking up the torque into halves or even thirds to make sure you get a good seal.

Sounds like a plan, pretty cheap...althought i'm sure that when the sled had bender pipes on it, it came with a kit that had the rear exhanger and head gasket...the sled might have been rebuilt for all I know..it was pretty much all set up for pipes when I bought the sled but they had stripped the pipes off it..so i bought a set of slps for $300 and the sled has never over heated..if the gasket is an opti-cool gasket how can you tell? would it be alright just to put hi-temp gasket spray on? Also what about the base gasket where as you'll be taking the jugs off?THanks alot!
 
You can use hi-tack spray gasket for the head gasket and it will PROBABLY be ok, but i know i have had them leak once or twice doing it that way, whereas with a new one you know its gonna work. Really just depends on if you trust it enough to justify the cost savings. As for the base gasket, same type of thing. A lot of guys run the base gaskets again because they dont operate under near the same pressures as the head gasket. Once again your call, but i wouldn't feel too nervous about reusing the base gasket as long as it is in good shape and doesnt stick to the cylinders at all when you removed them. Keep in mind that when you pull those cylinders, if they haven't been off before they may be on there pretty good, and may need a little coaxing with a rubber mallet to get them to break free from the dowels.
 
should he get his cylinders honed for the new rings, also if your desporate, you can heat up your head gasget with a propane torch then toss it in cold water. (i had to do this with my 76 mr175 dirtbike which you cant get headgasgets for)

if its the rubber ring gaskets you can use a hair dryer to shrink them if their stretched.
 
vipers have regular head gaskets, not o-rings like the srxs do. And yes that headgasket is stock.
