how do i know if i have a thin head gasket? I took it apart a while ago and to dooo the head gasket mod and found there i could not because it was only one piece steel gasket. Does this mean that i already have a thin head gasket installed?

the stock gasket on my machine had 3 layers..the middle layer being the metal layer. I dont think this is the layer you want to keep. You want one of the other 2 outer layers in there.
The 3 layers are rivited together to hold them.

The center layer is the spacer, and is made of metal and yamyrider is right, you do NOT want that one in there for your gasket. If you want to run a thinner gasket run two or one of the outer gaskets (black, have embossments for the cooling passages between the cylinders and head). Make sure you run good fuel if you go with the single layer.

yeah i didnt think that this was right. i looked at the tech page and know it susposed to be the to rubber layers and this deffienely the metal layer between them. i think i will have to get another one and try and do the mod to that one and just keep the rubber.

o0ps, what would you suggest runnning one or two layer on a vmax twin 600?
I've got a basically new .6 mm (the thin one) head gasket I can sell you. $25 shipped to you. It has about 1 hour of run time on it. Then you don't have to mess with splitting a thick one.

the .6 mm head gasket requires premium fuel right?
I picked up a new one for my 96. It is 5 layers. 1 black layer metal layer with ridges, then a grey layer about the same thickness and then the thick black plastic layer then the grey again and then black. My old "thin" head gasket is three metal layers (all thin, none with ridges.) Which do I use from the new one?

I have used the .6mm gasket in my 98 MM600 since it was brand new.
