I just picked up my jugs today from getting them honed. I need to clean the carbs yet and do a few other miscellaneous items. I haven't put anything back together yet. I was concerned about putting the bottom end together (oiling the bearings) and then the top and then having it all sit while I screw around with other things before putting the motor back in and starting it. How long is it ok to let the motor sit before starting it when you put it back together? When you put oil on the rings to help seat them, I assume over time that will come off the piston and skirt. Also how much yamalube should I put in the bottom end? Just a little bit on each bearing and needle bearing?
Anyone? Can I put it together tomorrow night and then let it sit until I get back from hunting?
Lube bearings and pistons and it's ok. Turn crank around couple timesafter built together.

Daman - I plan to. I had to pick up some yamalube just for this. I was running amsoil last season much to everyone that I rode with's chagrin. They wanted to blame the oil for me losing a ring, not the the 5000 miles since a re-ring...
Aside from lubing the bearings and the seals, do you put any additional oil down in the crank case?
Could be going together tonight then.... If I can find all of my stuff for hunting first...

Dnale, a lot of my friends run either amsoil or ipond and one still swears by yamilub…All good stuff owner preference I guess…Sh** happens, a lot factor lead to a failed ring(s)…Now for your question you place the crank in the upper case pre-lub the crank, set it in the upper case and make sure the brgs are seated correctly. I yamibond the upper case with crank in ( to seal the cases to each other ) as an insurance measure… then added about 1oz. Yamilub to the gear area ( water/oil pump shaft ) cavity in lower case then I held the crank and upper case as one unit and set atop the bottom case… yes near impossible but doable…Put in a few bolts hear and there to snug it up then laid it on its side and instated all the bolts- by hand snug…now spin the crank by hand and see if there is any bind, resistance…If no bind, then torque the bolt to sequence and spec…it’s a two step process, after the first step spin the crank…see where I’m going with this…yeh, yeh I’m abit anal… then spin the crank after the final torque is done…and keep spinning the crank after each install of a cylinder/pinston …and so on and so on…even after the head is on…you probably know this by now, when you were installing rings- u lube them, right and also the piston pin/needle brgs, right and a light (very) coat on the cylinder wall, right…as you went to the other piston(s) the oil ran off into the base as well as the excess oil on the crank, and u put some in the gear cavity…there should be lots till you get back to working on it. My engine is at this stage it’s on the bench over a week now and still can’t get to it for another week…hope this helps out…
Thanks. I appreciate any info I can get. It makes me feel better about where it's at.

Daman, I ran..yes, out of all my choices there is..was polaris VES2 no smoke, smells good, worked well and was easy to pull over when cold...Now I had over 16,000 kms on the sled when one day I had brain fart to shutdown my engine after a long hard pull down a railway bed while still in motion and all of a sudden the loudest backfire you had ever heard…Did not think much of it until I threw a two pistons…I thought it was a fuel issue, like bad gas or dirty carbs…not the case, a few T.Yers nailed it right, blew a seal…the mag side blew, spewed a little oil in the belly just below the mag/recoil…after some used parts and some great advise from here, I am ready to drop it in soon…Now I ran with this a little, sorry just thought you should know…I will be switching to iPond cause it’s cheaper here than the VES2, anyway the Polaris dealer keeps bugging me to try…yeh you no what I am about to say… no way, never, yamiforever…LoL …
I know there are a million (almost but not quite) threads on oils. I was pretty happy with the Amsoil. I haven't tried Ipone or Klotz mainly cause I haven't seen it to buy it. I wanted to get some at the Snow Show but ran out of resources.

my sxr 500 likes the ipone. bros viper drinks it faster than the moutul he was using before. just remeber no synth oil in it untill you get a couple hundred miles on it.
I plan to run a couple of qt's though it (yamalube that is) then go back to Amzoil or whatever else I find. I like the less smell.
