high mileage viper opinions please

hey viper jim and venom. good to see more newfie's on TY. not much snow here on the avalon during the winter.last season i put 800km on my 99 srx 700. it now has 7300km. wow!!!i cant imagine putting 8000 k on in one season! thats like --$1700.00 in fuel alone.my wife would kill me!!!
 
New rings every 2500 miles sounds like a little much, maybe at 5000 miles and a new top end at 8000 miles.
My 1986 johnson outboard motor has to have a million hours on her with out anything being done and thats with many years of abuse.
My polaris xc 700 had nothing done on her and she had over 10000 miles when i sold her.
If anything she was faster than when new.
I would be more concerned with redoing the clutches at 2500 miles than the rings , Clutches are were you lose performance and speed with miles.
 
Like I said Quebec#1, run yours for a million miles, its your sled, but your mistaken about the wear. If ya took it apart you would see the tell tale blow by on the piston skirts and in the bottom of your cylinders, its all black below the rings and in the transfer ports. As I have said a million times, its your sled, your option, I am not arguing with you, but its a fact that it wont run thousands and thousands of miles with nothing done and be the same output as when it was new!

You dont have to agree, its your sled, your option, just stating the facts. I tear these things apart and redo them day after day.

There was a post somewhere on here lately, that shows a guys pistons after 5000 miles, check out the black on the sides of the pistons, that isnt factory paint on there! check it out, youll see it, might be something interesting for ya to look at anyways, have a good day! :2strokes:
 
guess it all boils down to personal choices...persoanlly i dont know the history of my sled beeing i bought it last year and forgot to ask the owner if he had ever done piston/rings.. so im just going to change them this year and have peace of mind:)

I agree with this man a 100%, he tears down motors and mods motors for a living and his knowledge on these topics prove it. I'm gunna go with the guy that has the most experience in this situation. It all comes down to you, if you wanna keep that sled running like new. Then after 3 sets of rings and 10000 miles, you spend $300 bucks on a top end kit and start all over. At the price of rings and the lil time it takes, I'll do it from now on. Plus this a good and bad thing, but when you replace the rings, you can check your cylinders for chipping or cracking on the plating. This can cost ya more money than ya want if you do have such blemishs, but you dont want that platin in your bottom end cause say good bye to your whole motor instead of just the top end redoing. MY sled tore down at 2000 miles to replace with SRX base gasket and new rings, start puttin her back together, check my cylinders PTO fine, Center 1 small chip, MAG 2 decent size chips. An this is STOCK SLED with 2000mi. running on yamalube.

OH YA outboards 1 dont run at over 9 grand and 2 dont create any where the hp or torque these motors do for the size of them and 3 dont deal with huge temp drops like a sled does. Look at a 150hp outboard look at the size diff. and how many more cylinders it has over are sleds. Talking 2 way diff worlds on that topic.

You will find all the proof you need at the link above. 5000 miles on the sled and it was running good...but when i took the top end apart look what i found. You will se blowbye as well as signs of cold seizure....but it was not showing signs if this while riding. Good thing I checked ir this could have cost slot more money if she would have let go on the lake. It is not a big job to take the jugs off and check......cheap insurance.
 
Hey mr viper. I LOVE YOU!!!! I've been telling these GOON's for a LOT OF YEARS and they keep arguing with me!!!! I say 3000 miles becuase I use SYNTHEIC lubricants WHENEVER POSSIBLE and I keep away from YAMAJUNK oil.. Thats the ONLY reason I go 3000 miles!!! Lets keep this simple (and PLEASE help me if I am wrong).. 3 sets of rings, gaskets,couple of cans of brake cleaner every 3000 miles TIMES 3 for 9000 miles = around $300.00.... three sets of rings, 3 pistons and 3 nikasil replating jobs , gaskets and a couple of cans of brake cleaner (and having the sled apart for 2 weeks)=around $1000.00 for 9000 miles... Lets do the math $300.00 for 9000 miles OR $1000.00 for 9000 miles.. I went through the PUBLIC school system and I CAN FIGURE THAT OUT JUST FINE!!!! Thank you Gary Oles nosboy
 
I'm in the same boat here. Picked up a used machine with about 5000 miles on it. Have no idea if the previous owner did rings on it, I doubt it though.

Guess the general consensus is that I should invest a few $$$/hours and slap some new ones in??
 
mr viper....this could be a testament to what you are saying...ran my viper to 9200 miles without a tear down, thats when the center crank bearing left me stranded .
question....could blow by be so exsesive as to cause a crank bearing to fail.
the rest of the crank was plenty lubed up when torn down so i.m still trying to find out what caused the problem.
all 3 pistons were black from blow by and the rings were so soft that they wouldnt snap when twisted.
 
I've been going through the same dilemma with my 99MM600 and 5K on it and started a thread a while back on when is it time for a rebuild. I recently did a leak down test and both cylinders came back at 95% meaning they only had a 5% loss. I hear what the rebuild guys are saying but my question is what do I have to gain performance wise when the cylinders are still this tight other than some peace of mind that I've torn it down and looked at all the parts and maybe I will catch something. I'm now leaning towards just running it and checking the leak down every so often.
 
This is a viper motor with 5,700 miles. Sled ran great, won two grass drags this summer..but it still needs rings, you can see the blow by on the piston.How many miles does it take to break new rings in??
