bender clutch kit ?

I just got a bender clutch kit (they wouldnt tellme the helix angles , secret they said , HMMM ! ) , anyway It has a Yellow /orange primary spring and a black /silver secondary spring . Ive never done any clutch work myself but i want to try it . any one have suggestions on where to set the springs up for the best overall . Any help would be greatly appreciated , Thanks :letitsnow
 
Is your sled Stock? If so I'd send the Bender Kit back and go with this set up.
53/43 Helix, Green Secondary Spring rec. by alot of members on this site. Prolly cost you less than what you payed for the Bender Kit also.

One big thing I have learned from this site is ASK before you BUY esp. if you dont have a whole lot of knowledge on such topics.

copied that from another post. I talked to them last week. I would think they would be the ones to best answer your setup questions.

I have the same clutch parts (partial) sitting on my floor here beside me. I need to give them a call again soon to get the rest of the parts and setup instructions.

I talked to Bender on Wednesday, got the same answer. I bought a used Viper this year and noticed it had some clutch work done to it. Dealer didn’t know any of the details, so I figured Bender would help me. All they would say was that the 2002B helix was designed to be used with a non-piped Viper, which is what I have. The Yellow/Orange primary spring is also part of that kit. I know my secondary spring is black, but I never noticed any silver on it, I probably over looked that.

Anyway, I can’t tell you if the kit is any good or not, as we have no snow here. I did try it out on the lawn and it seemed to pull nice and hard, ski’s off the ground about 18”. Noticed my primary got really hot, I’m assuming that was because I was just hammering on and off the throttle.
 
All the secondary springs are black. The silver mark is the mark that matters. There are also ones with a green mark, red mark, and pink mark, all of which are different spring rates.
 
bender sent me some instructions , i looked at them a little better and i think they make sense now , anyone know if i can change the rivets with out removing the whole clutch . i dont have a clutch puller and dont see much sense in buying to use once ?
 
yes you can change the rivets without pulling the clutch, just gotta get the weights out of the clutch, which you would have to do even if you did take the clutch off. The weights are held in by the three pins near the perimeter of the clutch you need to either pry the clutch closed a little bit to get the weights out or remove the clutch cover with the clutch still in the sled and remove the spring, that way you will easily be able to slide the sheave and remove the weights.
 
w8th4snow - Did the instructions with the kit tell you which hole to put the secondary spring in? Mine's at 9 and I think it's too much. What do they recommend?

you do know there are two sets of holes right? The ones in the helix, as well as the ones in the sheave. Having it in 9 on the helix could still mean 30 degrees of variation by where it is on the sheave.

w8tn - that would be great if you could. Kits already installed, really just wondering what they recommend for initial secondary setup.

Well for some reason I cant attatch the pages i scanned , but anyway for a Viper with a stock pipes (aftermarket can or not ) the secondary spring setting is 80 degrees ( spring set at 6 and 2 ) hole 6 on the helix and hole 2 on the sheave . I hope this helps you out .
 
Quick update: Pulled the secondary and cleaned it all up. Also cleaned the primary and washed the belt. Reset secondary twist to 80, pre Bender instructions, but the primary is still slipping a lot and gets quite hot. Think I'll drop the twist to 60 degrees and see if that helps stop the primary from slipping. Is this the right way to go about fixing this problem?

Setup on the primary seems OK. It doesn't bog off the line, jumps to 8600 and stays there. That's why I'm focusing on the secondary setup.

Any other single pipe Vipers on here running the Bender clutch kit? What is your setup?
