After 27 years I finally got a 1980 SRX. Of course it has a tired engine. Compression is low. What do I do? My local machinist says just resleeve it with "chrome alloy sleeves" (about $180 per jug) or do I have it replated with chrome.(about $255 per jug). Yamaha used chrome bores for a reason, but what is it? The money isn't the issue, I don't like getting ripped off. The tech FAQ consensus is to stay with OEM pistons over wiesco. Any advice or other machine shops would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Yamajohnny.( I have a brand new APEX sitting in the garage, why am I screwing with this old stuff?.....Because its so coooool!)
let me tell you from personal expeirance with these old srx440's, I had alot of em and I had one sleeved 1 time, it ruins the engine performance! A sleeved engine will not dissapate the heat from the cylinder and piston and you will have to jet richer for this reason. Yamaha plated them because it wicks the heat out of the cylinder and piston at a lot faster rate and this allows you to run leaner jetting and of course makes more hp, a rich 2 stroke is less power, its very evident on these old 440's! Use the stock pistons they are lighter and better then the wiseco's

Thank you Mr. Viper, you are a wealth of knowledge. You saved me a lot of disappointment with this project.Do you have any sources for replating? The quote I recieved was from Central Snowmobile in Green Bay. They send them out to who knows where so they are just middlemen. Thanks in advance,Yamajohnny.
just a std strip and replate? needs no welding or repairs??? I can get you a price, let me know.
