ok i know its not a yamaha thread but my brother in law needs advice.. hes looking at buying a 1998 polaris xcr 700 .the owner said the compression was 100 across all 3 cylinders is this normal?isnt 100 a little low? my other brothere in law has a polaris 650 rxl with 130 across all 3 anyways i was thinking that maybe this xcr might need new rings well give me your advice because the owner seems to think that 100 psi is normal

i just statred at a polairs dealer ship and ive been doin alot of the old triples. its sould be around 120-125. 100 is pretty low. how many times are u pulling it over atleast 3 right?. also on thoes old triples u need to check the motor phaze. u do this by checking sticking a pen or scrwe driver in the top of tme center cylinder and bringing it to TDC then u use the screw driver to measure the depth of the pto and mag side cylinders and they should be no more then a 1/4 diferance in hight. as for the low compresson it most likely will need new rings or the cylinders are scored.

try a different compression tester, a lot of them seem to be off

ok well it was tryed with the engine cold and then heated up and also tryed giving gas at the same time..still 100. pulled 4 times each cylinder.. the tester works because ive done reading on 3 other sleds and everything was fine.. i just think the guy is on crack,,he was trying to tell my bro in law that 100psi is normal.. oh well hell be able to make the guy negotiate the price a little.. hes asking 2000$cdn with 5000 miles think its a good buy? also how much is a set of rings about?

exactly what i thought,,, but who would be faster on a lake race a srx 700 vs xcr 700..both stock

srx should take it. the '98 xcr 700 didn't have valves, the '99 did. If it were a 99 it would give the srx a run, but not the '98. Especially w/ 100 lbs. compression. 5000 miles is def ring time for those engines.

You may want to think about pistons too, or atleast check 'em out!!!

yeah thats what im going to do..bring down the guys price even more or just look for something else.. cuz a complete piston and ring job will be about what 300-500$ canadian?

ok so i was told that maybe the reason for the compression beeing so low it needs new rings and 3 pistons, but i was also told for this model the pistons are nikasil and that would be costly?
