track ratcheting

if the track is a little to loose,it will ratchet,what exactly does it sound like,took sled out for run today and noticed noise from down below.Checked my track deflection with 16 lbs pull with scale,track hangs down at about 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches.Probably to loose right.Don't want track to tight either.Lot of guys say they let their track hang down 1" in the middle without pull.I think mine is 11/4" without pull.
 
Its kind of a slipping /thumping sound mainly when you nail it especially in the bumps which compress your suspension.Tighten it up alittle and see if it goes away,I have never done mine by the book just loose and tightened up a little if racheting, I hope this helps, Josh
 
It sounds like several quick raps on a musical drum in quick succession. The best words I can come up with are "Chung, Chung, Chung, Chung" said in quick succession. You can feel it as well as hear it.

Your setting does not sound too loose to me.
 
When the sled is making this noise, is the track spinning like mad, in powder, or during a hard launch? You can feel the track ratcheting also, and it sounds like the track is grinding.
 
Seems to be when spinning in soft powder.When I launch seems good,but when I hit the soft stuff and punch it,I sort of hear a kind of grinding noise.Can't exactly explain it,but know it wasn't like that last year.Unless a belt slipping can make this noise.I'll have to raise my belt height in the secondary and try again.But clutches were not hot to touch.
 
As funny as this may sound, it sounds exactly like you would expect a plastic paddle hitting a bunch of rubber cogs to sound. Think of your bike chain skipping as a kid and change the sound from 'metal on metal' to 'plastic on rubber'.
 
BLUEMONSTER. Did you take your chaincase off? if you did check the chain tensioner. Cause that sounds close to a track ratcheting. I had the same problem with my other srx figured it out but tightening the track to its tightest
 
If you have a good place to mess around, try loostening the track a bunch and make it rachet, then you'll know what it feels like. Once you hear/feel it once, you'll know next time, it's pretty distinctive.

Of course don't run it that way due to track damage.

The fact that you don't notice it when launching but do in powder or jumping makes me wonder if there isn't hard packed snow or ice your track is hitting.
 
Still not enough snow,so when I punch it the track spins like an idiot down to the grasss.Leaving big mounds everywhere.When they freeze up ,later when I am wot I hit the forgotten suckers and almost kill myself when I hit them.Spinning out in these conditions is easy,but when I finally get traction and pin it more,this is when it probably happens under load.I will tighten a bit and keep testing. :postwhore
 
It will also ratchet if you hit the brakes hard enough if it is too loose. Or if your spining it on a stand and grab the brake too hard even if it does not ratchet under normal conditions. Just enough to not ratchet is the sweet spot. The spec is too tight.

You need a good base to test on or if you are studless try bare concrete holeshots they are always fun. Real cool rubber patterns are left in the pavement.
 
I never understood why people drill the brakes so hard when they put their sled on a stand. I see people all the time warming their sleds up on a stand before they go riding, which is a GREAT idea because it warms up the driveline as well as the engine and exhaust before you go putting a real load on it, so much less wear on your engine and driveline, but then you see them spinning the thing at 90 mph on the stand and then NAILING the brakes stopping the track dead, and drop it on the ground. Do they understand the concept of the backshift? It doesn't happen instantaneously, so then when they go to take off its like starting in second gear, and is murder on the belt and clutches. Sorry, just had to vent for a sec.

Nahhhh... all wrong..... it's Thumpty thump thump...... ! :)

B.T.W. I had a 96XT with reverse that drove me crazy finally, found the problem by holding the hood open and seeing the reverse lever jumping into netural under a hard load. Stiffer spring to hold down the handle fixed the problem !
 
last weekend I tightened the track 2 turns on each screw.Took it for a spin,seems like the noise is gone now.Could maybe slacken it up again by one turn to see what happens,but for now it is fine. :bling:
